By DIANA CAVAGNARO Project ETHOS Project ETHOS returned to San Diego On Aug. 26 for a knockout fashion show at FLUXX, the latest multi-million dollar nightclub in the Gaslamp Quarter. This was their second red carpet event held in San Diego featuring emerging talent in fashion, music, and art. Guests were able to purchase visual art and accessories at the show. The evening began with a performance by Sophia Fresh’s “This Instant” from the Step Up 3D Soundtrack. DJ Robb Rockwell and Ayeena provided the tunes for the evening. The fashion show previewed the Spring 2011 Collections of seven designers: Molly B Bikinis, Michael Mangiuno Design, Creative Fashionista, Cardi-Wrap by Kymaro, Blonde Peacock, and the show culminated with Project Runway Alums Jesus Estrada (Haus of Estrada) and Gordana Gehlhausen (GOGA by Gordana). Project ETHOS began 5 years ago in Los Angeles and is the brainchild of Jason Peskin who is Founder and CEO. This event closes the gap between Indie and Mainstream linking these talented artists with the community. Love Cures Cancer partnered with Project ETHOS for the evening. Love Cures cancer is an organization dedicated to benefiting children with cancer by raising awareness while working to find a cure. ‘Art of Fashion’ The 3rd Annual “The Art of Fashion” was presented by the Timken Museum of Art on August 28 in Balboa Park. The Timken partnered with Fashion Careers College (FCC) and showcased 16 students and graduates of FCC. They interpreted fashion designs inspired by masterpieces from the Timken’s permanent collection. Anita Crider was this year’s 2010 event chair. Fashion Chair was Patricia O’Connor who is the founder of FCC. Honorary Chair was the International fashion designer, Zandra Rhodes who was on hand to meet the guests. Attendees were able to enjoy cocktails and delicious hors d’oeuvres while viewing the models who were standing on cubes. (‘en tableaux’) in front of their artwork. As the evening progressed the models strolled through the museum showing off the fashions inspired by the world-class art. This gave the guests a chance to meet and mingle with the models and designers. Proceed from this event support educational programs at the Timken Museum of Art. This marvelous museum focuses on European old master’s paintings, Russian icons and American art. Admissions are always free. ‘Second Hand Rose’

The Angels of Aseltine presented “Second Hand Rose … Memories are Made of This” onSept. 15 at the Town & County Resort and Convention Center. During the social hour, aboutique was set up with more than 1,000 resale fashion items. These name-brand designerclothes included handbags, shoes and jewelry. Buying gently-worn clothes is a way to beecofriendly and help the earth’s carbon footprint. The shoppers all loved the great prices aswell as the fabulous fashions.

Yvonne Lindroth Silva chaired this fun event. The luncheon and fashion show began with afabulous rendition of “Second Hand Rose” performed by Bonnie Wainwright.

Carol Le Beau was mistress of ceremonies, narrating the fashion show and adding her wittydialogue. The models for the runway were local celebrities wearing designer clothing such asChanel, St. John Knits and Naeem Khan. Immediately following this delightful fashion show,all the lightly-worn clothes were for sale in the boutique.

The event was in memory of Betty Mabee, who passed away earlier this year. Mabee was abusinesswoman, a leader in the community, a world-renowned horse breeder and foundingmember of The Angels of Aseltine Auxiliary. The Aseltine School has been in San Diegosince 1968, and serves the needs of emotionally-disturbed and learning-disabled students,making it possible for them to lead independent and fulfilling lives. I’ll admit, I get excited — I’m probably the definition of “easily amused” — but when I was toldabout Project ETHOS, I was giddy with excitement.

Project ETHOS merges fashion, music, and art in one event, at once creating a unique avenue for bothparticipants (artists) and attendees. It’s not your usual “incubator,” shielding and nursing talent, butinstead it launches and nourishes artisans.

Project ETHOS closes the gap between the Indie and Mainstream worlds with anexperienced and focused eye for talent. Creating a link to decision makers is what drivesus to be a niche portal of exposing all emerging artistry to the media, public and industry.

It’s the combination of concert, fashion show, and art gallery exhibition all at one event! Isn’tthat just beyond mere cool?!

.San Diego-based music act Buddy Akai will be headliningProject ETHOS, the red-carpet fashion, music, and artshowcase, on April 22 at the On Broadway Events Center indowntown San Diego.

The electro/indie/rock band, along with DJs Robb Rockwelland Lady Gaga's very own Space Cowboy, will help highlightthe city's local talent in fashion, music and art on one night,under one roof.

Here is the official announcement for the event: After thesuccess of its last L.A. Fashion Week showcase featuring"Project Runway" contestants, Project ETHOS, is excited tolaunch its first-ever red carpet event in San Diego onThursday, April 22, 2010 at the On Broadway Event Center (615 Broadway, San Diego, CA92101) from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m.

"San Diego boasts an incredibly diverse and creative scene, which we are excited tohighlight with Project ETHOS' latest fashion, music, and art showcase," says Jason Peskin,Executive Director, Project ETHOS. "In terms of fashion, we've identified amazing talent inthe local community so we're presenting a unique opportunity for local designers toshowcase their lines alongside 'Project Runway' talent."

Season six contestant Gordana Gehlhausen (GOGA by Gordana) and season sevencontestant Jesus Estrada (Haus of Estrada) from "Project Runway" are set to headline theshow. Other designers and lines include: Stacie Taylor (Stacie May), Eleonore Santos(Garden Party), Jason Herrick (Fortune 421), Ian West (Eco-Panda), and Tiffany Tassano(Organic Planet). With the sophisticated appealof fashion, music, and art,Project Ethos presented ared carpet event featuring afashion show for “ProjectRunway” collections on thefirst night of L.A. FashionWeek.

Walking up The Music Box @Fonda Theater last Fridaynight music from DJ MandoFresko could be heardblasting from inside onto thestreet, playing Lady Gaga,the Black Eyed Peas, andother upbeat, technoversions of the latest singlesfrom various popular artists.

Girls in micro dresses and sky-high heels and guys with button up shirts and blazers linedthe streets, awaiting their admittance into the venue.

At the red carpet, a handful of models, designers and actors posed for photographers andchatted with event coordinators for Project Ethos.

Project Ethos is “an incubator for emerging artists.” They produce red carpet eventsshowcasing “all emerging Millennial Generation forms of creativity in one house, on onenight,” according to their Web site.

In addition to the entertainment, the event’s charitable partner was Love Cures Cancer.

“Love Cures Cancer is an organization dedicated to benefiting children with cancer whileraising awareness and working to find a cure,” Jill Queza, public relations representative forProject Ethos said.

Their name could be seen flashing on the screen throughout the fashion show, and was theunderlying cause of the entire night.

“The goal is to furnish opportunity for featured artists, as well as arrange a truly invigoratingexperience for an event goer,” Queza said

Inside, Bruno Mars, best known for his songs, “Nothing on You” featuring B.O.B. andBillionaire featuring Travis McCoy, started the evening’s festivities, and got the crowd’sattention by singing both hit songs along with other original work.

Although missing B.O.B. and Travis McCoy, Bruno Mars and his band brought the audienceto their feet within the first song, and soon the vast majority of the crowd could be seendancing to the beat and singing along. The combination of Bruno Mars’ raw talent and highenergy performance was enough to prep the audience for the upcoming fashion show andleave many new fans among the audience.

The fashion show featured 10 new designers including Gordana Gehlhausen (GOGA byGordana), Jesus Estrada (Haus of Estrada), Rochelle Corino (Rumplemunkeh), Maria Peralta(Devious Damzels), Rachael Feigelson (Love Child), Michelle Liu (EMEL), Shant Der Ashodian(ARKA Clothing), Omatu Gottschlich and Sandra Sturm (Fulani), Marialia Pacitto (Marialia),

LA Fashion Week: Project Runway's Gordana GehlhausenHeadlines Project Ethos Event

Project Runway Season 6 contestant Gordana was the headliner at Friday night's Project Ethos LA Fashion Week event at thebeautiful old Music Box theatre on Hollywood and Vine. Her collection was rich in vintage styling, layered looks at even classicknitwear. In case you don't remember Gordana from last season's show, she worked on the Macy's challenge with Irina as part ofthe winning team, and won the challenge to revitalize a old wedding dress. For me, her best moment on Project Runway waswhen she showed this absolutely gorgeous evening dress. A dress in this style and design was part of the collection she showedat the Project Ethos show. It's a show stopper and belongs on the red carpet.

I had the pleasure of interviewing Gordana after her LA Fashion Week show, and I learned a little more about her designperspective. Although she did not win Project Runway, Gordana was definitely the star of the show at the Music Box on Fridaynight. Indeed, Project Ethos held her show back until after 11 pm so that everyone could see her work. Even late arrivals werestill in time for Gordana. I asked Gordana how it felt to be the star. She said, "It feels good to have something that people want tosee." And they did really want to see it.

Crowd reaction to Gordana's collection was more befitting of a rock star than a fashion designer. The crowd was on their feet,rocking to pulse pounding music and screaming as her models walked the runway. It was quite a change from the reserve andbusiness-like atmosphere of New York Fashion week.

When she did Project Runway, Gordana was living in Charleston, SC and running her boutique GOGA. Now, she has relocatedto San Diego, CA and is a Southern California treasure. She still has her GOGA boutique in South Carolina, but has opened asecond GOGA in San Diego's Gaslamp district. You can see GOGA by Gordana online by visting her online store, ShopGoga. Anative of Yugoslavia, Gordana grew up in Bosnia. Her Eastern European work ethic is visible in every line of her work. She tellsme, "I make everything in the collection. All the samples are personally made by me. All the jewelry is made by me."

The Incubator

Since 2005, a young team of hardworking marketers, event planners, and go-getters have taken asmall, college-level showcase, and transformed it into one of the most talked about entertainmentevents in Los Angeles.

When founder Jason Peskin met a young designer attempting to expose her line, they firstenvisioned a simple fashion show to which they would invite buyers. However, after speaking tomany of their friends and colleagues, it was apparent that more innovation would be needed to sparkgreater interest in the event. Peskin, with a background in product marketing and concert production,had the right resources and relationships to bring more elements to the proposed fashion show.Adding a concert to the show made sense, but then adding multiple installations and fashion lines byother emerging artists suddenly made things more interesting. With a fashion, music and art theme,the first event took place at the historic El Rey Theatre in Los Angeles. More than 700 guestsattended and witnessed the birth of a movement - Project Ethos. This show sparked a need andenergy in the Project Ethos team to provide such opportunities to fellow artists of all kinds.

Now five years later, on the eve of LA Fashion Week, Project Ethos is poised to execute its biggestand most complex event yet at a newly renovated Music Box (formerly the Fonda). The outfit's 12thmajor showcase will feature 10 fashion lines, more than 80 models, two live bands, four DJs, and 12visual artists - all combining their forces of creativity to get the attention of the right people. Buyers,media, curators, event-goers, and consumers will make up the more than an expected crowd of1500.

Some of this show’s highlights include Gordana Gehlhausen and Jesus Estrada - two former ProjectRunway contestants. They were added as headliners to increase the exposure of younger, newerdesigners opening the show and create a richer experience for everyone attending.

Another major highlight is the addition of Bruno Mars to the concert portion. Mars is currently burningup the music charts and radio waves with the song "Nothing on You" by B.O.B. If the fashion andmusic elements weren’t enough to cause excitement, the show is dedicating an entire rooftop patio toshowcase the works of talented visual artists, including live painting from Michael Pukac. Further,Provecho Restaurant will provide the food, while DJ sets from Frontside will infuse the gallery withmoody vibes.

One of the great things about this Project Ethos event is that when the fashion show is over around11 p.m., the party is just getting started. The chairs around the runway will be cleared for a 12 a.m.performance by Love Grenades and DJ sets from Mando Fresko keeping attendees entertained until2 a.m.

Don't be mistaken, however. Despite all of the fun and excitement it provides with each and everyone of its events, Project Ethos is most proud of the fact that it has been working tirelessly for yearsto expose artists to unique opportunities while exciting attendees. Through blood, sweat, and tears,Project Ethos has arrived to contribute to the fashion week scene (but not take it over). After all, it ismore than just fashion.

Ever since the five-year partnership between events producer IMG and Smashbox Studios ended inOctober 2008, Los Angeles Fashion Week has languished without a lead event. Groups of every stripehave rushed in to fill the void, culminating in last fall's fashion month, which nearly spanned October.

Five months later, the fashion feast has turned to famine, and most of the groups that have staged runwayevents in past seasons have dropped off the calendar — including the organizers of Downtown LosAngeles Fashion Week.

That leaves just two holdovers from last fall, BOXeight, which plans to reprise last season's hybrid photoshoot/presentation format for a handful of designers at its downtown studio space, and Los AngelesFashion Weekend, which returns to Sunset Gower Studios. Both events are scheduled for Friday throughSunday and are open only to media, buyers and invited guests, with a few exceptions. There are nightly"after parties" at BOXeight, and on Saturday, a Green Initiative Humanitarian Fashion Show is part ofL.A. Fashion Weekend. More information can be found at greenyouthmovement.org.

After a single season collaborating with Rock Media, Gen Art, a not-for-profit incubator of up-and-comingtalent, returns as a solo act. It plans to host 20 of its L.A.-area designer alumni in a poolside event at theHollywood Roosevelt Hotel on Tuesday from 7 to 10 p.m. The event is open to the public.

Rather than present full collections, each designer is expected to showcase a single fall 2010 look "on alive model or muse." As of press time, the list of designers included the likes of Jared Gold, JeffreySebelia, Louis Verdad and Rami Kashou. Tickets and information are at genart.org.

Also open to the public will be Project Ethos, an event that ambitiously promises to deliver "L.A. FashionWeek in one night," with a 10-designer runway show headlined by two "Project Runway" alumni(Gordana Gehlhausen and Jesus Estrada), bookended by musical performances and surrounded by artinstallations. It is scheduled for March 19 at the Music Box @ Fonda, 6126 Hollywood Blvd. Additionalinformation is at projectethos.com.

While no doubt of interest to the city's fashion community at large, none of the Los Angeles Fashion Weekevents — save for L.A. Fashion Weekend — are organized with an eye toward business and publicity in themanner of New York and European fashion weeks.

But that could all change at the eleventh hour, thanks to a concept that's still taking shape — dubbedConcept. As of press time, downtown activist Brady Westwater, designer/photographer Mike Vensel (theman behind the short-lived Kitten Fashion Week of a few years back) and the management of Spring ArtsTower (the former Citizen's Bank space), are offering 8,000 square feet of recently renovated space at 453S. Spring St. to lines left in the lurch when other events fell through.

Many of the details are still in flux, according to Westwater. "Right now we're in the phase of reaching outto designers to see what their needs are," he said Monday, noting that there has been enough interest tobook three nights of designer runway shows and presentations — currently March 22 to 24. Westwatersaid the group has the option to expand a few days on either side of that, depending on interest.

Though it's too early to tell exactly how Concept will translate into reality, the idea of disenfranchiseddesigners banding together to show their collections to buyers, media and invited guests on a shoestringbudget in underutlized downtown commercial space amid folding chairs, surrounded by plastic drink cupsand the blare of a cobbled-together sound system isn't difficult to imagine.

After all, that's exactly what Los Angeles Fashion Week looked like nearly a decade ago.

Itsnot a one person vision, our team is as many as 50 at a time and everyone's voice is heard. That openness and ability to except an uphill battleand fight on, has put us at the forefront of events in Los Angeles, also inspiring many spin offs.

The Music Box continues its long relationship with Goldenvoice to provide the music industry’s mosttalented acts. Announcing a new partnership with Insomniac Events to bring the most sought after DJsfrom around the world every Saturday night, The Music Box is setting a new standard for LA venues.

The Music Box has been at the very center of Hollywood's dazzling nightlife for nearly a century. Thestoried edifice, which for decades has been a lavish sanctum of glamour and spectacle, commissionedone of the nation’s top designers, Roy Nachum, to help carefully recreate the baroque interior of thishistorically significant relic of Hollywood’s Golden Age. With Nachum’s relentless attention to detail andunique, progressive design flare, The Music Box has redefined ‘sophistication.’

Both an accomplished painter and a peerless designer, Nachum’s designs achieve a perfect balancebetween the historic and the futuristic. While many of the venue’s original details have been refurbished,Nachum’s attention to detail, avant-garde expertise, punk aesthetics, and his control of light and spaceare particularly evident in the venue’s completely transformed grand entrance.

Walking into the remodeled The Music Box is a dramatic experience with the original flourishes, featuringa moodily lit, ante-chamber design. Luxurious theater curtains surround the ballroom and Bosch artimagery adorns the walls. The new design also features plush private booths with optimal viewing, aneasily accessible two-sided main bar and new checkered dance floor. The versatility of the space hasbeen greatly expanded by replacing the original sloped seating with a level floor. The balcony offers amost unique party perspective with a commanding view of the main stage. To complete the venue’sHollywood makeover, the marquee has been updated by adding lighting from the original 1926 movietheater design.

One of only two venues in Hollywood with a fully permitted 24-hour operations license, The Music Boxallows a late night experience to last as long as deemed necessary. After the current renovations, thetotal capacity of the venue will accommodate over 1500 guests, covering over 30,000 square feet.

designer lies also in his ability to immaculately fit the clothing perfectly for each body. The collectionfeatures both ready-to-wear and couture women’s and men’s clothing, utilizing knits, leathers, silks,and metal details and accessories, reminiscent of a sexy punk-inspired, skeletal nature.

Gehlhausen (www.shopgoga.com) describes her GOGA by Gordana fall collection as a “play ontexture, color, and experimentation with tribal influences of different fabrics, knits, and layers”inspired from her recent trip to China. She believes that women should feel elegant and sexy, butcomfortable wearing her designs. Her knits are currently featured in the spring/summer issue ofVOGUE Knitting magazine. Also a savvy businesswoman, Gehlhausen owns and operates herboutique, GOGA by Gordana, located in the historic Gaslamp District on 4th and Market Street in SanDiego.

The two “Project Runway” alums met at a local fashion show last year and now share a studiotogether in downtown San Diego. Both Estrada’s and Gehlhausen’s collections will be available at herboutique this coming fall.

What a Yearby Jason | Executive Director

This year was absolutely the most momentous year in the history of Project Ethos. We went from 2big events in one year to 4, one being at the House of Blues Sunset Strip. We produced another 4private showcases at one of the most beautiful venues in Hollywood. To top it off, we helpedlaunch a great charity Love Cures Cancer.

It was intense and challenging but we always kept in mind what the purpose was:

To actually help our participants.

Why are we so passionate about this?

We work so hard fighting tooth and nail for our artists. Its not just said in our promos andliterature… it is SHOWN on the cover of CA Apparel News and the pages of 944 Magazine. Itsmanifested by our designers being placed in stores, our artists selling dozens of paintings and ourbands having meetings with labels and publishers in the green room.

Our first LoveCuresCancer.com benefit will be held on the elegant Kress Roof Top, featuring a silent and corporate sponsored auction, live entertainment, as well as a host of film, TV, and Pro Athlete celebrities. All proceeds will be donated to our selected charity of choice. As it will be held in the beginning of spring, our launch party's theme will be "Take a chance on love”.

Love Cures All Mission Statement:

Our mission is to spread love by leaving the world better than we found it. Our vision is to raise funds for existing charities by targeting today’s youth with event marketing that uses familiar technologies with familiar faces to meet them on their terms and thus, turn early adopters into long-term donators.

About Love Cures All:

Having its founding members working in Hollywood, Love Cures All has a unique access to celebrities and media technologies that most other charitable organizations lack. Thus, our combination of live event and digital-drive fund raising will provide benefactors with the means to personally and conveniently donate to our partner charities. This optimal combination of live-event and viral fund-raising campaign will strategically leverage young Hollywood with a digital technology mix of mobile texting, video messaging, social networking, and most importantly, love.

Our Partners:

Young Hollywood is showing us love and rallying behind our cause by filming our celebrity videograms, which will be used to launch our viral marketing web campaign. Mojoflo Productions is donating our strategic economic consulting and business management services. At both live and digital events, Brand-In Entertainment will be managing corporate sponsored auctions, while Project: Ethos and Illuminate Collective are overseeing the planning of our live events. In addition, Imaginuity has come on board to donate their brand management and website design services and WhamMobile is donating its mobile technology services that enable benefactors to donate to our digital-drive. Lastly, we have a variety of other young Hollywood celebrities and their PR firms joining our efforts as well.

Guests began the night by perusing all of the gifts and bidding on the silent auction whichincluded a weekend away in Utah, “Hot Mama” gift bags, and a lot of amazing artwork. Oneof the highest bidding items was a signed Wilson volleyball signed by Tom Hanks.

One of the coolest pieces of the evening was from the team from Ecovations, who made asurfboard out of Ed Begley, Jr’s fence. I spoke with Darren Moore, founder of Ecovations, whowas very excited to show off the surfboard he and his team had worked so hard on. Darren’smission for Ecovations is to try and take ordinary items and make them eco-friendly. Theyalso offered surf lessons with the board that were bid up to $750.00.
