INT. EMILY’S APARTMENT. MAGIC

EMILY sits at her small kitchen table, pen in one hand, head resting in the other. Her task is monotonous and she can barely keep her eyes open. RYAN appears behind her and he places his hands on her shoulders.

Ryan is a nice looking guy. He’s clean shaven with short, well kept, hair, and his clothes say relaxed but not casual. This is in stark contrast to Emily. Everything about her screams uptight. She has her hair up with clothes she must have worn to work earlier. She hasn’t allowed herself the comfort of changing after work.

RYANI have to go.

Emily perks up.

EMILYAlready, but you just got here.

She doesn’t take her eyes off her work.

RYANEm, I’ve been here for three hours. Besides, all the guys are going to be there soon, and as much as I love to watch you work...

EMILYI’m sorry, I really thought I would be finished already. I’ve just been so tired.

Emily runs her eyes and gets up from the table.

RYANYou need a break. All this work is leaving you exhausted. Go out tonight. Call Sam or something. The two of you can unwind, but get some sleep. You’ll work better if your rested.

EMILYI know, it’s just, this is to important.

RYANHey, look at me, (he grabs her shoulders) you’re going to be great.

Page 3: Last day (12.13.13)

EMILYYou don’t know that.

RYANI do, because I know you, and I know how hard you’ve worked.

EMILYI’m sorry, I really wanted to be done by now.

Ryan starts to back away.

RYANIt’s fine. It really is, but I’ve got to go.

EMILYYou boys have fun. Don’t do anything you wouldn’t do if I were there.

Ryan stops at the door.

RYAN(sarcastic)

Oh, in that case I’ll be back in like twenty minutes.

EMILYWhatever.

Ryan smiles and starts to close the door.

EMILY (CONT’D)Ryan! You’re not going to wish me luck?

RYANYour thing’s not till Monday, Em. I’ll see you before that.

EMILYThe preparation’s the most important part.

RYANGood luck with your preparations then. Now, I’m going to go get lucky.

He starts to close the door, but quickly swings it back open.

2.

Page 4: Last day (12.13.13)

RYAN (CONT’D)(ineloquent)

Poker. You know what I meant.

Emily smiles and shakes her head. She turns back to the papers on the table. Only a moment passes before the door bursts open and Ryan comes rushing back in.

He is wearing an oversized red sweatshirt and faded jeans. His hair has been completely mucked up and his face is no longer clean shaved.

EMILYOh my God! You scared me. What are you doing?

Ryan rushes toward her and grabs her by the hand. She clutches her chest.

RYANYou need to see this.

EMILYStop it, that hurts.

He drags her over to the window facing the parking lot.

RYANWho is that?

He points down for her to look and see Ryan. The same Ryan that she had just been talking with. The Ryan who was dressed well and clean shaven. Not the Ryan she is standing with now.

EMILYI don’t understand.

He releases her hand and she starts to back away from him. Her hands still clutching her chest.

RYANThat’s what I want to know. I came to find you and saw him.

EMILYThis isn’t, I can’t...

She reaches back for the couch and lowers herself to the ground.

RYANEmily! Emily?

3.

Page 5: Last day (12.13.13)

He races forward and helps her to the ground.

EMILY(breathing heavily)

I just need to catch my breath.

Emily loses consciousness.

INT. EMILY’S APARTMENT. NIGHT

EMILY is lying face down on her couch. The room is dark when she finally stirs. RYAN is sitting by her.

RYANGood, you’re awake.

EMILYDid I fall asleep?

RYANYou fainted, actually.

Her eyes pop open and she sees RYAN with the red sweatshirt. It takes her a second to catch up, but she quickly remembers all that happened. In one movement, she jumps up from the couch and swings around the backside, opposite Ryan.

RYAN (CONT’D)Wait, I can explain.

EMILYCan you?

RYANWell, no, not really, but I’m not going to hurt you.

EMILYHow do I know that?

RYANBecause I would have already.

EMILY(sarcastic)

That’s very reassuring.

Emily reaches back by the kitchen and grabs a knife from the counter. Ryan’s body language changes from alert and defensive to calm and collected.

4.

Page 6: Last day (12.13.13)

RYANIt’s me. You know me. Would I ever hurt you?

Emily’s posture relaxes a little.

EMILYHow do I know it’s you?

RYANI don’t know, but believe me when I tell you that I want to know what’s happening as much as you do.

EMILYI doubt that.

RYANYou’re not the one this is happening to.

EMILYThe double of my boyfriend broke into my apartment and assaulted me. How is it that this isn’t happening to me?

She puts her free hand over her chest.

RYANI’m sorry, you’re right, but you’re not the one who can’t remember anything.

EMILYWhat’s that?

RYANI don’t remember anything before this morning.

EMILYYeah, that’s not creepy at all.

RYANEmily, please. You’re the only one I can turn to. I need your help.

EMILYFine, but I’m keeping this.

She holds up the knife.

5.

Page 7: Last day (12.13.13)

RYANFine.

EMILYWhy do you think I can help?

RYANSince this morning, my memory has been coming back little by little. When I saw you earlier I got a boost, or something, and a ton of memories came flooding back.

EMILY(sarcastic)

That’s sweet. How does that mean I can help?

RYANI think you can help me remember.

EMILYThat’s it? That’s all you want me to do?

RYANThat’s a lot.

EMILYWhat about this double thing? Do you remember something about that?

RYANNo.

EMILYBecause that’s kind of weird.

RYANYou basically know everything I do now.

EMILYDoes your head hurt?

RYANWhat, no. Should it?

EMILYI don’t know, but I’m thinking it would if you were hit in the head or something. I’m just trying to figure out what this could be, and now I don’t think it’s head trauma.

6.

Page 8: Last day (12.13.13)

There’s just a million other things it could be.

RYANA million, huh?

EMILYWhy not? You could be a clone, or a shape-shifter. Maybe, you were tracking your doppelganger and, just before you could make contact, you were struck with memory loss.

RYANCome on, Emily, this is serious.

EMILYI am serious. There is no realistic explanation as to why your here right now, so either you’re something weird or I’m dreaming. I’m leaning toward I’m dreaming. I’ve been pretty tired lately. I’m sure that can cause weird dreams.

RYANYou’re not dreaming.

EMILYSaid my dream.

RYANI know you’re not, because I’m not a dream.

EMILYOh (she jumps). Am I dead? It happened. I’m dead aren’t I.

She sits down on the couch.

RYANNo, You’re not dead.

EMILY(sarcastic)

Convincing argument.

RYANI’m his twin.

Ryan Sits down next to her.

7.

EMILY (CONT'D)

Page 9: Last day (12.13.13)

EMILYWhat?

RYANIt’s a realistic argument. I found my twin, but I lost my memory before I could meet him.

EMILYYeah. (Pause) No. How would you know me or where I lived.

RYANI found out before I lost my memory, and for some reason that’s what I remember.

EMILYThat’s sweet and all, but I don’t think...

RYAN...Time travel.

EMILYOh, good one. I like that.

RYANNo, I think that’s what this is, seriously

EMILYWhat? How?

RYANI don’t know yet. It’s just a feeling. I’m not from now.

EMILYThen you’re only from tomorrow, because you’re not that old.

RYANThank you.

EMILYAnd you need to get that time travel device fixed. Coming back with no memory is super unhelpful.

RYANThat’s a good point.

8.

Page 10: Last day (12.13.13)

EMILYThank you.

RYANWhy would I lose my memory going back in time?

EMILYIf you went back in time.

RYANI’m pretty sure. It fits.

EMILYSure, besides the time travel part.

RYANWho’s that?

Ryan is looking at a picture across the room of Emily with a young man.

EMILYJealous much?

RYANI recognize him.

She watches him for a second as he tries to figure it out.

EMILYHe’s my brother. That’s how we met, or how I met your twin anyway.

RYANAt a bar.

EMILYYou remember that?

RYANSort of. It’s hard to explain. I picked you up at a bar?

EMILYHardly. That’s just how we met.

RYANI remember differently.

EMILYDoes this mean you’re getting you’re memory back?

9.

Page 11: Last day (12.13.13)

RYANSome of it. Can we go?

EMILYGo where, to the bar?

RYANSorry, that’s probably asking too much.

EMILYNo, it’s just that I’m not sure...

RYAN...I get it. Don’t worry. I’m just trying to think of things to jump start my memory.

EMILYI’m sorry, I’ve just got this presentation on Monday that I have to work on.

RYANThe Atwater account.

EMILYHow did you know that?

RYANI don’t know.

EMILYSo if you really are from the future you would know if I get it. Do I?

RYAN(smiling)

I don’t know, sorry. You believe me?

EMILYNo, but it doesn’t hurt to ask. Do you remember that trip to the lake?

She puts the knife down and gets up to look at another picture. Ryan’s eyes fall on the knife on the table.

RYANWhich lake?

EMILYGuess not.

10.

Page 12: Last day (12.13.13)

Ryan puts his head down.

RYANTrust me, I wish I could remember.

Emily sees him with his head in his hands.

EMILYYou know what, let’s do it.

He lifts his head.

RYANAre you sure?

EMILYWhy not? Sitting around here’s not going to do either one of us any good, and you need to get your memory back.

INT. BAR. NIGHT

There is only a few people at the bar. EMILY and RYAN pick a secluded place near the back.

EMILYAnything?

Ryan smiles.

RYANNothing substantial, but I’ll let you know.

EMILYSo, what do you think this is all about?

RYANWhat?

She gives him a look of disappointment.

RYAN (CONT’D)The time travel?

EMILYI’m just saying, what’s the point of going back in time if you can’t remember anything from before you got there.

11.

Page 13: Last day (12.13.13)

RYANIt’s a good point. I don’t know. My memory’s coming back, though. Maybe I figured I’ll get it all back eventually.

EMILYSure, we got time.

RYANFunny.

EMILYWhat if you were a time traveling secret agent and you were attacked, which is why you don’t remember, and the only time you could escape to was this one.

RYANI don’t think I’ve done this before.

EMILYIt’s just that, when you think about it, what makes now so important. If this is a one time thing why would you come back here?

RYANThis is so frustrating. It’s like the answer is right out in front of me, and all I have to do is grab it.

EMILYThis isn’t working. Come on, I have another idea.

She pulls him up from the bar.

EXT. PARK. NIGHT

EMILY pulls RYAN by the hand over to one of the swings. She positions him at just the right spot and moves in front of him. To his surprise, she plants a kiss on him.

EMILYHow about now?

RYANLet me guess, first kiss?

12.

Page 14: Last day (12.13.13)

She sighs and drops her shoulders.

EMILYNothing? That should have done something.

RYANHold on. I think it’s working. Do it again.

She goes in for another kiss, but notices he’s smiling. Before she reaches him she pulls back and slaps him on the shoulder.

EMILYFunny.

Ryan shrugs. He still has a smile, but something changes. His mood changes. His smile fades into a look of confusion, and then he starts to sway. She clutches his arms, but he doesn’t fall. His head goes limp and then he slowly raises his eyes to meet hers.

RYANWow.

EMILYIt worked?

His smiles returns. He notices that she has him in an embrace.

RYANHi.

EMILYHi?

RYANYou’re them most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen.

Emily blushes and let’s go of him. She avoids his eyes, but he can’t take them off of her.

EMILYAll right, fella, it was just a little kiss. Let’s not get crazy now.

She pulls away from him.

13.

Page 15: Last day (12.13.13)

RYANThis is so weird. I’ve been with you all night, but it’s like I’m seeing you for the first time. I can’t explain why, but it’s so good to see you.

EMILYYou remember. That’s great, so what is it? Time travel spy?

RYANYou.

EMILYCome again.

RYANI came back for you.

EMILYWhat’s that mean?

RYANI don’t know. I don’t have all the pieces yet.

EMILYBut you remember.

RYANYes. We can go home now.

EMILYAre you sure? Maybe you’ll remember the rest of it.

RYANI’m sure. I remember enough.

INT. EMILY’S APARTMENT. NIGHT

EMILY opens her front door and walks in. RYAN follows behind her slowly. She puts her keys down on the counter and he sits down in the living room.

EMILYAre you okay?

RYANYeah, why?

14.

Page 16: Last day (12.13.13)

EMILYYou haven’t said anything since the park.

RYANJust thinking, I guess.

EMILYAbout what?

He stands up.

RYANCan I get some water?

EMILYSure.

She gets a glass and pours him some water.

EMILY (CONT’D)What have you been thinking so hard about?

RYANI don’t belong here.

EMILYWell, sure, you’re from the future.

RYANThat’s not what I mean. I can’t shake it, but it’s definitely a bad feeling.

They are both standing in the kitchen. Emily looks over to the table with her papers on it.

EMILYYou don’t happen to remember anything more about my account, do you? Do I get it?

Ryan puts the glass down aggressively.

RYANThere you go with that again.

Emily is surprised, and Ryan begins to clean up some spilled water.

RYAN (CONT’D)I don’t know why, but it annoys me. It’s not that important.

15.

Page 17: Last day (12.13.13)

EMILYHow can it not be that important? This will be huge for me.

RYANIt’s not important.

She begins to smile.

EMILYI think I understand now. I get the job, and it takes me away from you. You’re jealous.

RYANThat’s not funny.

EMILYIt’s a little funny, and how would you know? You don’t even remember.

Ryan cracks a smile.

RYANI’m not jealous.

EMILYIt’s convenient you’re forgetting that part.

RYANWhatever.

He continues to stare at her. Emily blushes.

EMILYWhat?

RYANI love you.

Her smile fades as she watches him. Sitting across from her with a giant smile on his face staring back at her. She looks away and gets up from the couch.

RYAN (CONT’D)What is it? What did I say?

EMILYIt’s nothing.

He gets up to follow her.

16.

Page 18: Last day (12.13.13)

RYANTell me.

EMILYDon’t worry about it.

He spins her around to look into her eyes and she has a tear running down her cheek. He thinks she is crying, but she is just breathing heavily again.

RYANWhat’s wrong.

EMILYNothing. I promise.

She starts to breath more heavily as he clutches her shoulders.

EMILY (CONT’D)There’s a prescription on the counter. Could you hand that to me?

RYANSure.

He lets her go and she lays down on the couch. He fills a glass of water and gets her pills. When he reaches her she is having trouble breathing, but she manages to take her medicine. Ryan sits with her and watches as she closes her eyes and drifts off to sleep.

INT. APARTMENT. NIGHT

Emily lifts her eyes to see Ryan pacing back in forth in front of her. She moves her hand and he looks over to her.

RYANHey. Are you okay? Do you need something.

EMILYNo, I’m fine. Did I feint again?

RYANYou didn’t feint. You had some kind of an attack, or something. I didn’t know what to do.

EMILYI took my pills. There’s nothing else to do.

17.

Page 19: Last day (12.13.13)

RYANShould I take you somewhere. Do you need to see a doctor.

She grabs his hands and holds them.

EMILYNo, I’m fine.

RYANEmily, you’re not fine.

She looks outside and sees that it is still dark.

EMILYWhat time is it?

RYANI don’t know. (He checks his phone) Five-thirty.

EMILYI know where we can go, but you’re not going to like it.

EXT. PARK. MAGIC

EMILY and RYAN sit next to each other on a park bench. The Sun is rising in front of them. Emily doesn’t look as well as she did previously.

RYANI forgot you liked to do this.

EMILYThat’s good right. Not that you forgot, but that you remembered.

RYANSure, I guess. I just wish I knew more. I keep getting this feeling like I’m wasting time.

Emily slowly turns to scowl at him.

RYAN (CONT’D)No, not like that. This is pointless. No, I mean, I keep feeling like I’m here for a purpose, but I still don’t know what that is.

18.

Page 20: Last day (12.13.13)

EMILY(sarcastic)

Well, whatever it is I hope it’s important. I’d hate to think I’ve been wasting my time.

RYANYou know what I mean. I promise you whatever it is, this is what I would rather be doing.

EMILYOh yeah, usually you tell me you’d rather be sleeping.

RYAN(sarcastic)

Sure, if I had to wake up for this, but we were already up. The Sun rises early.

Emily turns to look out over the pond. The sun is rising in the distance.

EMILYYou probably don’t remember this, but there was one time you promised me you would meet me for coffee at sunrise. You didn’t make it. I had to go over to your place and knock on your window to wake you up. Once we got out there it was beautiful, though. I thought so at least. You fell asleep.

She stops talking. She is not looking at Ryan. Her eyes are still watching the horizon. Slowly she turns to see if Ryan is asleep. He’s not. His eyes are on the horizon too. It’s almost as though he is going to cry. Emily watches him for a second.

RYANI remember.

EMILYThat’s another good sign.

RYANNo, I remember everything.

EMILYEverything, everything?

19.

Page 21: Last day (12.13.13)

RYANYes.

EMILYThat’s great, isn’t it?

Ryan isn’t looking at her. His mood has grown somber.

RYANI think we should go.

EMILYWhy?

RYANEm, please, can we go back?

EMILYOkay.

Ryan hops up and Emily attempts to follow, but she hesitates and falls back into her seat.

RYANAre you alright?

EMILYI’m fine, just give me a second. So much for a good nights rest.

Ryan sits back down next to her. He watches her, fighting back tears.

RYANWe need to go.

EMILYWhy did we stay up all night again?

RYANTo be together. I’ll help you.

EMILYThanks.

Ryan helps her up.

INT. AMANDA’S APARTMENT. DAY

RYAN opens the door for EMILY.

20.

Page 22: Last day (12.13.13)

EMILYI’m sorry, but I think I may go lay down for a bit.

RYANSure.

She walks by the kitchen and sees her work on the table.

EMILYOh, I’m so far behind.

RYANDon’t worry about that now.

He grabs her arm to help her to her bed. She doesn’t move immediately, but looks at him.

EMILYDo I get it? Come on, be honest.

RYANIt’s not important.

They start to walk back to her bedroom.

EMILYIt’s important to me.

RYANYes, you got it. You walked in fully rested and beautiful. They took one look at you and knew you were the one. You did your presentation and got the gig right after.

EMILYYou make it sound so easy. What about us? Do we make it, or do we end up driving each other crazy?

She seems weaker now. Ryan is struggling more to keep her up.

RYANEm, You’re going to drive me crazy till the day I die.

He helps her down onto the bed and turns to get a blanket.

EMILYWhy are you here?

21.

Page 23: Last day (12.13.13)

RYANFor you. I told you that.

EMILYAre you sure it’s for me? Why wont you look at me?

RYANWhat are you talking about? I am looking at you. I can’t take my eyes off of you.

He pauses for a moment and stops unfolding the blanket around her. He looks into her eyes.

EMILYI’m sorry. I thought we could have a normal life. I thought it would be just like everyone else’s.

RYANWhat are you talking about?

EMILYI know why you’re here.

She grabs his hand as he is positioning the blanket. He fights back tears.

RYANContrary to what you believe, you don’t know everything.

EMILYI know enough.

RYANWhy didn’t you tell me?

EMILYThe same reason you didn’t tell me.

RYANI told you everything. I didn’t keep anything from you.

EMILYToday was the first time you ever told me you loved me. Why didn’t you say it before?

RYANI was scared and weak. Surely, you know I love you.

22.

Page 24: Last day (12.13.13)

EMILYI do now.

RYANYou were scared? Is that it? I could have been here for you.

EMILYYou are here for me, and I’m not afraid of dying. I was afraid you would see me differently, and I didn’t want anything to change between us. Besides, It wouldn’t change my situation. There’s nothing anyone can do.

RYANI’ve never forgiven myself. I wasn’t there for you when you needed me the most.

EMILYBut you are here for me, and when you go back you can go on knowing I wasn’t alone.

Ryan shakes his head.

RYANThere is no going back, Em. It was a one way ticket, or a brief layover, whatever you want to call it. There is no going back for me.

EMILYSo what now? Is this our last day?

He crawls into bed with her.

RYANI don’t know what it is, but I’m happy I have it.

EMILYMe too. Hey!

RYANWhat?

EMILYYou lied to me.

RYANAbout what?

23.

Page 25: Last day (12.13.13)

EMILYI’m not going to get that account am I?

RYANYou wouldn’t have wanted it anyway.

EMILYI worked hard on that.

RYANIt would have been so time consuming, and all it would have done would have been to take you away from me.

EMILYI like what I do.

RYANYeah, but you like me more, right?

EMILYMaybe. You’re okay. You did come back in time to be with me, so you get some points.

They smile together.

INT. EMILY’S APARTMENT. DAY

The door unlocks and SAM, Emily’s female friend, comes in.

SAMEm, You here? I’ve been calling.

She comes further into the apartment.

SAM (CONT’D)Ryan thought we should hang out tonight. He said you were wanting to unwind a bit. Em?

She walks into the bedroom to see her laying on the bad. She is on her side with her arms across her chest, as if they are clutching something. There is no one else in the room.

24.
