Local comedians and friends of late comedy legend Robin Williams gathered in Mill Valley to pay tribute to their beloved friend, neighbor, and performing inspiration. As the Marin Independent Journal reports, area comedians gathered to share jokes at the theatre at 142 Throckmorton Theatre where Williams had performed on numerous occasions. The event marked the first time since the actors passing that the Mill Valley theatre held a night of comedy. Comedians did routines and told stories to the sold-out crowd about the comedian that had meant so much to this community and to the world. Many of those in attendance were visiting the theatre for the first time, just wanting to present for a special night where Williams would be honored by those who lived and worked alongside the man.

• The event was hosted by comedian Mark Pitta who opened the show by saying, “Welcome to cathartic Tuesday.” Pitta’s show has been running for about 10 years, largely because of the buzz from comedians like Williams and Dana Carvey would workshop new material at the show.

• Comedians told about how Williams, when not performing at the theatre, liked to hang out in the green room and mingle with the other comedians. Many of those comedians were in attendance for this event and were invited on stage to share their stories of Robin Williams. The consensus amongst those in the room that the man was as generous and he was brilliant.

• One comedian, Johnny Steele, told a story of performing a set at the Throckmorton Theatre and doing a bit about men in Mill Valley riding on $6,500 bicycles. After the show, Williams complimented his Steele’s set, and asked him if he was a cyclist. When he said he wasn’t (“Bikes cost $6,500!”) Williams bought him a bicycle and the two became riding partners many years hence.

• This was just one of many touching tributes made by some of the funny people who knew him best. All in all, the night served as a touching tribute to a man beloved in the community he called home.
