How  to:  make  an  heirloom  shrug

kootoyoo  …  click  &  hook

As  with  any  project  the  key  is  having  everything  on  hand  that  you’ll  need.

For  this  project  you  need…  a  crochet  hook  (say  about  a  3.5mm)  an  old  square  crochet  tablecloth  matching  thread

Page 3: how to make an heirloom shrug

Begin  folding  your  cloth.    Every  one  of  these  tablecloths  I’ve  ever  seen  has  a  scalloped  edge.    Brilliant  because  there  is  no  measuring  required.

With  right  sides  together  match  corner  scallop  with  the  second  scallop  below  the  fold.

Pin  into  place.

Place  your  first  pin  3  scallops  from  the  fold  line.    This  “gap”  will  form  your  arm  holes.

Count  down  3  scallops  from  the  fold  &  insert  your  first  pin.    The  three  scallops  make  your  sleeve  hole.

3rd    scallop  from    fold

Begin  by  making  a  slip  knot  in  your  matching  thread  (I’m  only  using  red  so  you  can  see  it).

Insert  your  hook  through  the  work  at  the  “boPom”  of  your  sleeve  opening  …  yep  –  where  you  put  that  first  pin.

Pick  up  your  slip  knot.

Pull  your  slip  knot  through  to  the  front  of  the  work.

Using  the  exisTng  holes  in  the  paPern  begin  chaining  the  two  layers  of  cloth  together.

Page 9: how to make an heirloom shrug

Once  you  reach  the  end  of  the  double  thickness  of  fabric  snip  off  your  thread  &  weave  in  the  end.

Page 10: how to make an heirloom shrug

You  can  see  that  the  line  of  chain  follows  the  lines  of  the  pins  &  no  damage  has  been  done  to  the  original  tablecloth  as  we  have  been  using  the  exisTng  holes.

Remove  your  pins.

Repeat  the  line  of  chain  sTtch  for  the  other  side/sleeve.

Now  open  up  your  folded  &  sTtched  cloth  into  a  kite  shape.

PosiTon  your  brooch  –  I  made  this  one  out  of  a  vintage  buPon  but  maybe  you  have  something  that  belonged  to  your  gran?    Use  that!

When  you’re  not  wearing  your  shrug  store  it  flat  &  folded  inside  out  so  that  you  don’t  stress  your  temporary  seam  too  much.

Wear  &  enjoy.
