Batik is a ancient method of color dyeing. Batik is the process of applying dyes to different surfaces. Batik produces some of the most beautiful art in the world.

Chinese New Year is celebrated for 15 days. The special part is the family reunion dinner. Children look forward to receiving Ang Pow or red packets of money from elders.

Hindus and Seeks celebrate Diwali [Also known as Deepavali/Divali/festival of lights] to appreciate the victory of good over evil. The day begins with an oil bath and prayers. At breakfast they give each other company and have fun.

KL is one of the world’s famous destination for entertainment. It hosts many exciting events every year. For example, Chinese New Year, Deepavali, Hari Raya, and Christmas. If you come from another country I’m sure some people in KL celebrate one of your favorite celebrations.

In KL fireworks are often held because there are many celebrations. Many ethnic Malays, visitors, and local Malays enjoy seeing the fireworks.

The Gombak River really means something to KL. The Gombak is the left river and the right is the Klang. The Gombak River is next to the tin mines. The word Kuala Lumpur means “Muddy Confluence” in Bahasa. Because of the Gombak and Klang Rivers, KL got it’s name.

The Hibiscus is a flower that is often seen in KL. The Hibiscus is a member of the Mallow family. Cocoa, cotton, okra, baobab, and durian are members of the mallow family,too. The Hibiscus is one of the 200-220 plants in the Mallow family.

There is a huge population of Indian people here, in KL. That is why Diwali [Deepavali/Divali] is a big celebration here. Here there are many Indian shops and restaurants. Many people like to eat Indian food like Roti Canai and Paratha.

There are many jungles in KL. In KL there are many trees and animals, after all KL used to be a whole jungle!

Kampungs are very traditional villages in KL and Malaysia. Kampung are made out of wood. Kampungs are very earth friendly with houses made on stilts, so no poisonous creatures will come inside.

KL’s main languages are Cantonese, Bahasa, and Tamil. There are more people speaking Tamil than other Indian Languages. The same with Cantonese. More people speak Cantonese than Mandarin. In KL there are people from all over the world and they speak many different languages.

There are many mosques in KL. Many people in KL are Muslims, so they go to mosques. There are also other places of worship. The National Mosque [see below] was built in 1956 and it can fit 15,000 people inside!

Nasi Lemak can be found anywhere in KL. It is a very popular dish for Malaysians in KL. Nasi Lemak is coconut rice with meat/fish on the side.

The Orang Asli are the indigenous people of KL and Malaysia. Orang Asli means “Original People” in Bahasa. The Orang Asli are earth friendly.

Pewter in KL is popular, it is very pretty too. It iss made like this, Copper + Antinomy + Tin=Pewter. Many workers work to make Pewter in KL. They make lots of useful items, for example cups, necklaces, e.t.c. Royal Selangor is the largest pewter factory in the world.

In KL there is a lot of quality, because there is a lot of space and people take care of each other. KL makes people want to go because of the quality. That’s why KL is very popular.

Ramadan is when people who are Muslims in KL fast. It lasts for a month. They can not drink or eat anything from sunrise to sundown.

The Sultan is like the king except a sultan can only be king for 5 years. The Sultan now is living in KL and his name is Abdul Halim. He is the first sultan to be elected twice. His first time as king was 1970-1975.

The Twin Towers are 1,500 feet and 88 stories high. Since the Twin Towers are so tall 5,000 workers were needed. The ball on the top of of the towers are made out of 14 tubes which represent the 14 states of Malaysia. The Twin Towers were made by two companies Japanese and Korean.

In KL there is lots of unity. Unity [yoo-neh ti] is something to do with agreement with people around you. There is a club called Leo Club Of KL Unity which helps young men and women to save others in their community and around the world.

There are many visitors in KL. They come from all over the world. KL is an attractive place because of the Twin Towers and other sites.

KL is hot and humid. The average temperature in KL is about 80F [27C]. The rainiest months are November to March The hottest months are from May to September, Most of the time in KL the temperature is the same all year.

Yap Ah Loy is the 3rd captain of the Chinese when they came to get jobs in the tin mines. He is well-known because of his great deed, he helped KL develop into a city.

Zoo Negara is in KL. It is a zoo which keeps many interesting animals. It has also a plant exhibit, and amphibian world. Zoo Negara has many things to tell you there. Many visitors, locals, and people like us go there.
