Evaluation

This quality of work I have produced isn’t very high. This could be due to the fact of the camera I used, the setting & the time I had to take the photos in. If I had more time, digital photography would be of a higher quality.

The speed of taking photographs is fast, but getting the right shot & setting up an appropriate background can take quite a lot of time. It is faster, however, than illustration. Photography comes in to use with the other two methods I looked at ( comic book effects & rotoscoping.)

Digital photography is used a lot in everyday life & in industry. It can be used in children's books, but you very rarely find just photography in a graphic novel.

Digital photography is not appropriate for my audience, as I want to produce a graphic novel. But I will be using comic book effects & possibly rotoscoping on images I will be taking, so it is useful.

Resources required to take a photo is basically a camera. You can alter the image in post-production with software such as Photoshop.

Using illustration can produce a a high quality piece of work, depending on whether you have the skill to do it or not. You can create an illustration using different mediums such as pencil, colouring pencils (which is what I used), pens, ink, water colour to name a few.

The speed of production is slow, depending on the medium you are using & what you are trying to produce. The work I produced did not take as much time as some of the other methods I looked at (rotoscoping).

Similar products can be found in children's books. Illustrations are used to help tell the story & are also quite minimalist & simple. Graphic novels used to be drawn out by hand, which would count as illustrations. They have moved away from this now (y hand), they use computers now to do this.

They would be appropriate for a children's audience (especially the one I produced). I feel like they would be inappropriate for a graphic novels audience as they would expect more due to the genre being of very high quality work.

Recourses required to do this work include the medium you want to use (stated in first paragraph) & paper/another material. You will also have to get your work transferred onto a computer using a scanner.

Using methods such as the the cut out & palette knife filter gallery tools, along side the threshold tool you have the ability to overlay both layers and produce a high quality piece of work that looks similar to the comic book products already out there.

I can produce such work pretty fast & the continue to speed up as I continue to use such tools. The first photo used the cut out filter which I think would looks more & gives more of an effect of a comic book, compared to the palette knife filter which gave a more life like cartoon effect. Either would be useful depending on what you were doing. The threshold tool was useful for both.

These tools I used are not the same used by comic book producers, as they would work from a drawing outline, although you do get a similar effect.

Although such tools work well for a possible graphic novel, it would not work so well in a children's book.

I have decided to do a graphic novel, so these tools would work very well & look effect for my piece of work. If it looks like a graphic novel, it should be effective for the target audience.

Resources needed for this work is a photograph to work on top off & Photoshop.

Evaluation

Using tools such as rotoscope & colour range, I have been able to reproduce Zoella (A YouTuber). The quality of this work is quite high, compared to other methods I have looked at. It shows specific features & shaped of her.

The speed of this production is quite slow, compared to Comic Book Effects, as you have to rotoscope over an image. Depending on the quality you want will slow or speed down production.

Similar products to the are t-shirt designs. You will also possibly find rotoscoping used in children's books & also graphic novels, as the finished product does look appropriate for both.

As I do want to produce a graphic novel, there is a faster way to do such work (comic book effects). I will probably not use this tool unless I wanted to make something not in the actual photograph.

Resources required to produce this work include a photograph of some description to work on top off & Photoshop.

Overeall Evaluation

I feel the experiments that I did went very well, they taught me what I can do well, the speed I can do them in & if they will be appropriate for the graphic narrative I want to produce. I want to produce a graphic novel of Little Red Riding Hood.

The Comic Book effects & Rotoscoping methods on digital photography would work well as it produced similar & high quality results to an actual graphic novel. I don’t feel like illustrations would work well with the production of a graphic novel, it is more suited to a children’s book. It would not work well with the other methods I’ve looked at.

I feel like I’ve mastered rotoscoping, as I have used it more than the other methods. I think I did to practise taking digital photos in a set up setting. I could go about this by taking more photographs in a set up. Depending on the photos, the Comic Book effects could go either way. I’ve practised with different techniques though & feel confident.

Overall, I feel confident in the work I am going to produce. I think I can use the chosen methods at hand to produce a high quality graphic novel of an interpretation of Little Red Riding Hood.
