Introduction: The music video for their track is another interesting one relating to the dance music genre. My group member and I really liked the look of this music video and some scenes in particular. These included the multi-coloured footage of model Gigi Hadid (as shown in the screenshot on the left), which is blurred and appears to be blurred with other similar scenes overlapping it to create a ghosting effect. Therefore, I decided to do a textual analysis of the video to learn about it, be inspired and hopefully make our music video as captivating as this.

Music:It's interesting to learn from this song due to it's commercial success and how well it is used in this music video. For example, the fast cuts used throughout the video help to emphasise the quick nature of the song which makes it seem compelling and somewhat 'crazy.' These are typical features of songs/music videos which appeal to active, young audiences which my group aim to attract too.

This song is an up tempo, deep house track. The website, www.youredm.com, called it an “upbeat tune,” with "bass-y plucks and piano chords.” A reviewer from Nylon magazine also compared it to other dance music influences including Disclosure’s and 90’s Eurodance music. It has stereotypical themes associated with other dance/house music songs. This is because it explores themes of love and exploration as replicated in the video. In relation to Andrew Goodwin's conventions, it proves that there is therefore a relationship between visuals and lyrics. For example, Disclosure and Lorde’s video for their synth-pop/dance track “Magnets” (which I studied), also revolves around ideas relating to love and the loss of it.

Mise-en-scene:This music video presents Gigi Hadid’s character as lying in a mortuary which insinuates that she is dead. By including props like the metal table she is lying on, a ‘medical’ looking bracelet around her wrist and the spotlight above her, it suggests this as well as that the music video is going to be about her.

This is proven correct and she is shown in other environments which contrast with her death. With accompanying fast cuts and quick transitions, her character is shown moving from place to place. This implies that she has either gone back in time or ‘woke up’ to discover how ‘deep’ love can be. With the absence of a male character within the video, this implies it may be about the exploration of self-love and possibly female empowerment.

The idea of exploration and learning new things is emphasised by scenes such as her walking through a hallway looking confused and finding a club. She then appears on a boat surrounded by jet ski's, on a beach and being surrounded by motorcycles.

By including these different environments and fast forms of travelling it suggests that 'love' can be confusing and ever-changing. This is an idea which we could use in my group's music video to imply the impacts of losing and gaining love as connoted by Years & Years's song "Desire."

Camera shots:This music video uses a multitude of varying shots that work really well together. For example, close-ups, medium close-ups and wide shots of nature, that the sea is as "dee are used to contrast with close-ups of Gigi Hadid's character "arising from the dead" during the opening scenes. This may used to portray the sharp contrasts between life and death which could be used in a dramatised manner to compare how it feels to gain and lose love. Throughout the video, more of these shots are used (especially wide shots), to show different scenes including a club which emphasises the fast paced, dance music nature of the song.

I also like how panning is used in different ways, for example, with the scenes involving the see. In the beginning, the camera pans across the sea from left to right and then in and out in a different scene. This may be used to metaphorically suggest, the sea is as "deep" is as "love" can be. Therefore, it could insinuate that you can drown and become overwhelmed with emotion love provides which is a possible reason for why Gigi is introduced as waking up from the dead. This could also relate to Andrew Goodwin's conventions and how he thought there are intertextual references, such as this.

Editing:My group member, Amber and I are fans of how the editing is used in a really unique way. Scenes in particular, involve Gigi being shown acting naturally. However, with the addition of different colours, the footage being sped up, scenes being overlapped to create a ghosting effect and the footage being cut with fast cuts and transitions this portrays the video as being "chaotic,” as shown above. These are typical techniques and themes that are stereotypically associated with music videos of this dance music genre, due to it being fast paced.

Due to this, I think that we will be inspired by this to replicate something similar with the person or people we will use in our video. This may be especially useful, as this music video is about love, like the song "Desire" we have chosen to use for our project. Therefore, by using editing similar to this, we can portray our characters as also being "insanely" connected to love.

It's also interesting to consider that Gigi's character (as well as the other included females) may be an example of Laura Mulvey's Male Gaze theory in music videos. Her body is often shown, such as in a bikini (which is a refence to mise-en-scene and relates to the other females within the video), which could be related to the perceptions of what love looks appears to involve to a male audience. This is interesting to consider as the song is produced by Calvin Harris, a male artist.
