THE NINE SHOTS

STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS

Page 2: 9 Shots - Star Trek Into Darkness 2013

SHOT 1

The first shot is an aerial shot. In approximately 20 seconds the shot zooms in from outside the planet's atmosphere into the path outside the Nibiran settlement. The planet is covered in red flora which tells us it is not planet earth. The only text we are given is "Class M Planet Nibiru" which gives us the location of the scene. The soundtrack in the first shot comprises of natural noises of the planet as well as tribal yells. The fact that the scene is taking place on a foreign planet already informs us that this must be a Science Fiction film. The mise-en-

scene consists of the planet's natural setting and the characters.

SHOT 2The second shot is a medium shot which is filmed from a portrait viewpoint. The shot shows a character running through an alien forest with something in their hand, it appears they are escaping from the natives. The mise-en-scene consists of the planet's forest trees. The soundtrack is quick pace music; the music goes with the beat of the character's running .

SHOT 3

The third shot is a medium close up of the character who is still escaping through the

forest, the mise-en-scene continues to be the planet's forest. In this shot we can also hear the

natives shouting on top of the musical soundtrack.

SHOT 4

SHOT 5

The fourth shot is a medium long shot. We can clearly see the figure of the character running from the natives, we can also see the natives who are chasing the character in the background. The mise-en-scene comprises of the forest and the Nibiran settlement in the background. We can now see that the character has been running through an open path in the forest; we could not see this from the portrait viewpoint. The character contrasts with the rest of the shot so we can focus on them more easily than on anything else.

The fifth shot is another aerial shot. Through the trees we can see how the chase continues. At this point the music suddenly becomes more

concluding, this gives you the idea that the person or creature escaping is about to get

caught.

SHOT 6

SHOT 7

The sixth shot is a medium close up of the character, by now the scene has established clearly that the object in the character's possession is very important. The mise-en-scene continues to be the forest. the concluding music continues through to this shot.

The seventh shot is another medium long shot. The character jumps in terror at something we

are not yet able to see although we can hear roaring as the character shouts with fear. The mise-en-scene is now made up of a few less trees than before which makes the shot feel

more open and shows us that the space around the character isn't cramped suggesting that the

animal we can hear roaring is big.

SHOT 8

SHOT 9

The eighth shot is at a low angle as well as over the shoulder. In this shot we are shown the monster or animal that caused the character to shout in the previous shot . The use of the low angle makes the creature appear very powerful over the character. The monster appears to be trying to attack the character which makes the audience unsure about the character's future. The mise-en-scene is made up of the planet's red tree leaves.

In the ninth shot of the opening sequence the character gets out a gun to kill the

creature attacking them. This is a medium close up shot. The mise-en-scene is still the

red flora of the planet. In conclusion, the first nine shots have

established that this is a Science Fiction film and the first scene is an escape scene on a

foreign planet.
