Wheatus – Teenage dirtbag (9 frame analysis)

The second shot shows what seems to be a stereotypical teenager arriving to college on his bike. From the fact that h is centre of the shot and he is the first character that we see in the music video, we can gather that he is the main character of the storyline of the music video.

The third shot that I have decided to include in my 9-frame analysis is the shot of his bike being run-over. This symbolises what is happening to the main character himself as he is almost been run over by the popular ‘jock’ that is dating the person he admires, as he seems to be more attractive and popular than the main character.

The fourth shot shows the main character staring at the person he admires. However, she has just got out of the car of the jock that she is presumably dating therefore the main character knows he has feelings for her but he can’t do anything about. This is representative of the events that follow throughout the music video as he can’t win her over because he’s just a ‘teenage dirtbag’ and he is a jock.

The first shot shows what seems to be the main character is falling asleep on the stairs. He is the stereotypical ‘geeky’ teenager you would expect to see wearing baggy clothes and reading books. The fact that this is the first shot of him falling asleep suggests that the next setoff images that will follow will possibly be about what he is dreaming about...

The fifth shot I have chosen to analyse is the one of when it shows the main jock who is dating the girl that the main character admires. He is centre shot between his two companions and the camera is at a low angle looking up to him to try and show that this particular character has dominance over everyone of the school.

The sixth shot shows the main character again but after he thinks the girl he admires has just smiled at him. However, it shows the main jock barging him out the way when he walks down the hallway. This again shows the dominance that the jock ha over the main character that again he is better than the main character and this is why the girl has chose the jock over him

The seventh shot shows the jock with his arm around the girl after the main character quickly realises that the girl he admires was not staring and smiling at him instead she was staring at the jock who just barged him out of the way. This shot is very effective as it makes us feel sorry for the main character and makes us want him to ‘get the girl’ in the end

The eighth shot shows that the ‘teenage dirtbag’ gets the girl in the end; this goes against the stereotype and perhaps reflects today’s modern society that we do stereotype teenagers. But this image in a sense shows that with perseverance it doesn’t matter how popular you are if the girl likes you then that’s al that matters not how you are seen as in college (teenage dirt bag)

The ninth shot (final shot) shows the same teenager that has been the focus of the video waking up from the dream he has just had about ‘getting the girl’. He has dreamed his fantasy, however the fact that he was woke up from this dream would suggest that this storyline of the geek getting the girl is too farfetched therefore it is symbolic of the fact that this is what it is like in today’s
