USAGE IN CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY

• The work environment–dust, gases, fumes, sprays, lighting, noise, ventilation

• Buildings and site sheds–floors, stairs, roofs, walls, etc.

SCAFFOLDING

ELECTRICAL SAFETY

• Shut off power and grounded.

• damaged or worn electrical cords

• Regular checks

• Overhead electrical power lines are located and identified.

• Ensure that ladders, scaffolds, equipment or materials never come within 10 feet of electrical power lines.



FLOOR AND WALL OPENINGS

• Floor openings (12 inches or more) are guarded

• Installation of toe boards



ELEVATED SURFACES

• Use of sign boards

• Elevation >= 48 inches, Guardrails.

• Use of toeboard

• A permanent means of entry and exit with handrails

• Material is piled, stacked or racked in a way that prevents it from tipping, falling, collapsing, rolling or spreading.



HAZARD COMMUNICATION

• Location and type

• Hazard information

• Each container of a hazardous substance is labeled with product identity and a hazard warning(s)

• Manuals on “how to use”

• Employee training program



CRANE SAFETY

• Maintain 10 feet distance from any electrical power line.

• Electrical grounding of machines

• Instructions are posted and visible to the operator.

• Cranes are equipped with a load chart.

• The operator understands and uses the load chart.



HAND AND PORTABLE HAND TOOLS

• All tools and equipment must be in good condition.

• Worn or bent wrenches replaced regularly.

• Appropriate handles used on files and similar tools.

• Tools stored in dry, secure locations where they won't be tampered with.

• Grinders, saws and similar equipment provided with appropriate safety guards.



FIRE PREVENTION

• Combustible scrap – store or remove.

• Use of approved containers and tanks

• Liquefied petroleum gas – special care

• Extinguishers serviced, maintained and tagged at intervals not to exceed 1 year.

• "NO SMOKING" signs



HEARING PROTECTION

• Identify the source

• Use branded earplugs or earmuffs – easy handling

• All hearing protectors are labeled with a Noise Reduction Rating (NRR) in decibels.

• Hearing protectors should be kept with employees at all times so they have them when needed.



RESPIRATORY PROTECTION

• Based on the hazard.

• Medically certified.

• Reusable respirators – proper cleaning .

• Training of employees.

• All employees with beards, facial hair - prohibited from wearing respirators.
