Introduction

• IEEE 802.20 is a new standard for mobile broadbandwireless access.

• IEEE 802.20 was developed by the Mobile BroadbandWireless Access (MBWA) Working Group andsponsored by the IEEE 802 Local and MetropolitanArea Networks Standards Committee.

History

• Published in August 2008

• Liaison relationship with ARIB

– ARIB (Association of Radio Industries and

Business) of JAPAN adopted and standardized

802.20 for Japan application.

Page 4: Mobile Broadband Wireless Access

Mission

• Efficient & packet-based air interface optimized for IP-

based services

• Affordable, ubiquitous, always-on, and interoperable

mobile broadband wireless access

Page 5: Mobile Broadband Wireless Access

Scope

• To define the PHY and MAC layers

• Optimized for IP-data transport, with peak data

rates larger than 1 Mb/s per user

• Supports various vehicular mobility

Page 6: Mobile Broadband Wireless Access

802.20

• IEEE 802.20 will fill the gap between cellular networks

and other wireless networks

• Different from 802.11(WLAN) and 802.16(WiMAX)

• It will increase coverage or mobility

• Defines Medium Access Control (MAC) protocols

with several different physical (PHY) layer

specifications

Page 7: Mobile Broadband Wireless Access

Technical Aspects

• Peak user data rate

• Peak aggregate data rate

• Spectral efficiency

• Bandwidth

• Maximum operating frequency

Page 8: Mobile Broadband Wireless Access

System Aspects

• The 802.20 standard intends to permit either a fixed

hierarchical network or non-hierarchical network.

• The specification structure provides a versatile

framework that can easily accommodate future services

and capabilities while not compromising QoS.

Page 9: Mobile Broadband Wireless Access

Application Support

• It shall support applications such as video, web

browsing with graphical capability, e-mail, file

uploading and downloading without size, streaming

video and audio, Voice-Over-Internet Protocol (VoIP),

instant messaging, and all while maintaining an

always-on connection.

Page 10: Mobile Broadband Wireless Access

Security

• Includes three major factors protecting against theft,

privacy of the user, denial-of-service attacks.

• AES is the encryption algorithm is used to provide

security.

• Providing authentication to mobile station and base

station.

IEEE Std 802.20.2

• IEEE Standard for Conformance to IEEE 802.20

Systems-Protocol Implementation Conformance

Statement (PICS)

– This standard represents the Protocol

Implementation Conformance Statement for

conformance specification of access nodes and

access terminals based on the air interface specified

in IEEE Std 802.20.

Page 13: Mobile Broadband Wireless Access

IEEE Std 802.20.3

• IEEE Standard for Minimum Performance

Characteristics of IEEE 802.20 Terminals and Base

Stations/Access Nodes

– This standard specifies minimum performance

parameters and the associated test methodologies

for implementation of IEEE 802.20 compliant

systems.

IEEE Std 802.20a

• Management Information Base Enhancements and

Corrigenda Items

– This enhances IEEE 802.20 Management

Information Base (MIB). This also corrects any

errors, inconsistencies, and ambiguities associated

with the MIB clause of IEEE Std 802.20

Page 15: Mobile Broadband Wireless Access

IEEE Std 802.20b

• Bridging of IEEE 802.20

– This specifies the mechanism for the support of

bridging of IEEE 802.20 networks.

Summary

• The IEEE 802.20 Standard provides highly optimized

solutions.

• Significantly higher performance and flexibility than

competing technologies.

• Optimized mobility and advanced QoS mechanism will

enhance user experience and provide leading edge

performance.

• Service providers will benefit from the use of flexible

mechanism to deliver and differentiate their services.

• An implementable standard for commercial and

consumer application.
