two Specimen are given… We have to find that which heat treatment process is done on specimen. And to find specimen on which no process have done

Objectives

Consists of five major steps

Sectioning Mounting Planner Grinding Polishing Etching

Steps

Page 5: Metallurgy project on Heat Treatment process

It is the process in which the specimen is preserved in Backlite or Acryl. This process is done with the help of mounting press and thermoplastic

material which is either backlite or Acryl. The process is done with specific condition. After the process we get the preserved specimen in Backlite.

Mounting

Rubbing the specimen against abrasive material in order to eliminate the

scratches. We use p types of abrasive materials to eliminate the scratches. In Polishing the specimen is rubbed against abrasive material and water is used

as coolant. This is also known as rough polishing which is sub type of polishing. After this we rubbed the specimen with cloth on which diamond paste is used

to get the mirror like surface after rough polishing. This step is known as fine polishing.

Polishing

During this process we constantly examine the specimen surface with the help

of metallurgical microscope. On bases of this examination we with time modify the scale of abrasive

material. We start from P200….. And end the process with P600…..

Similarly,we rubbed the specimen till P600 on which maximum scratches were removed and after that we did fine polishing.

Etching is a process in which a specimen is depth in a chemical solution for

some seconds to visible the microstructure. We than examine the specimen under microscope to watch its microstructure. On basis of this microstructure we than conclude that which heat treatment

process is done on the specimen. The chemical solution contains following chemical In this chemical solution agent is Nital

Etching

Chemical Solution

Ethyl Alcohol (98%)+Nitric Acid (2%)

After doing our research we finally concluded from the picture (P1) that the process

done on one of the specimen is annealing.

After comparison we can say that sample 1 is before HTP and sample 2 is Annealed.

Conclusion and Final Results

P1 P2

Before annealing After annealing

Page 13: Metallurgy project on Heat Treatment process

• The first s specimen has very large black (pearlite) and white (ferrite) portions so

it is before HTP.• And Second There is Enough non uniform structure As before HTP.• For Annealing First reason is that there is Enough uniform structure.• Second is that there is more ferite (white area) and less perite (black spots).• And the Reasons for more ferite is that .• Enough time is given for cooling from upper to lower critical temperatures to the

specimen .• So Finally we can say it confidently that the process done on the specimen is

Annealing .

Reasons supporting our Conclusion
