THIS IS A MOMENT OF CHANGE IN CANADA’S ELECTRICITY SYSTEM

TIME FOR A VISION

Many electricity assets are approaching their end of life and must be

replaced;

Developments in information technology and automation raise exciting

possibilities for a reconfigured electrical grid;

Extreme weather reminds us of our reliance on critical electrical

infrastructure; and,

Many stakeholders are advocating greater forms of regional integration in

North America.

3

THE CASE FOR ACTION NOW

The Canadian electricity system is in need of massive infrastructure renewal,

with most of Canada’s non-hydro assets needing renewal or replacement by

2050.

FOUR RECOMMENDATIONS STAND OUT AS THE ONES LIKELY TO PRODUCE THE GREATEST TRANSFORMATIONS

RECOMMENDATIONS

Each of the following recommendations would contribute significantly to one

or more of the Vision 2050 objectives of renewing the system, delivering

maximum value and contributing to a low carbon economy.

1. Accelerate innovation and customer management of energy;

2. Implement financial instruments for carbon reduction;

3. Enable electric vehicles; and,

4. Expand collaboration across borders.

THE ROLE OF RENEWABLES AND

DISTRIBUTED GENERATION

BENEFITS OF GRID CONNECTIVITY

The grid provides in-rush

current support for starting

large motors, which may be

difficult to replicate with a

distributed generator.
