• Granted the 2010 EGC award• Reason of winning: integrated administrative

system, which ensure the environmental aspects consider in budgets, operational planning, reporting and monitoring.

• Better reputation, increased tourism, more investment

The City of Stockholm’s Environmental Program for 2012-2015

Main goals• Environmentally efficient transport• Goods and buildings free of dangerous

substances• Sustainable energy use• Sustainable use of land and water• Waste treatment with minimal environmental

impact• A healthy indoor environment

Other priorities of the Environment Programme are: • Encouraging cycling and walking• Reducing noise levels• Increasing the amount of ecological food

products purchased by the city by at least 25 percent

• Reducing greenhouse gas emissions to less than 3 tons per Stockholmer

• Reducing incorrectly recycled waste.

URBAN DEVELOPMENT1. Hammarby SjostadFirst environmental city district– the city imposed tough environmental requirements

on buildings, technical installations and the traffic environment

– has its own eco-friendly system for handling energy, waste and water.

– Incineration of combustible waste to produce both electricity and district heating

– The use of waste heat from treated waste water to heat water in the district heating system. Stockholm Royal Seaport

CLEAN CITY • Invest in district heating and biofuels

• Hogdalen plant – most modern waste sites, burn waste and turned into heating and electricity.

• Energy efficiency in the ‘Million Programme’’, such as new heating units, extra insulation, solar panels and bla2.

• Plan for a fossil-fuel free Stockholm 2050

GREEN CITY• Surrounded by more

than 200 nature reserves across the region.

• Stockholm park programme- development of parks and green area

GREEN BUILDING

• eight-storey apartment block purely from WOOD. • a cozy, affordable and sustainable place to live• "probably the tallest residential building in the world made entirely from wood".

International fairs• to expand the feel of

the space even during the dark winters as well as clean the air

Green School• new type of school

with a modern approach to sustainable living

WATER-WASTE MANAGEMENT• The treatment

works clean in several stages before it is released into the Baltic Sea.

• Wastewater into biogas.• Before the treated wastewater

is released, the heat is recovered as district heating.

SUSTAINABLE MOBILITY1. CONGESTION CHARGING

• All vehicles are chargeable with the exception of diplomat registered vehicles, military vehicles, emergency vehicles, public transportation, foreign registered vehicles.

• Biofulled vehicles- powered on electricity, ethanol and biogas, free from charged.

• No charges on evening, nights, weekends and public holidays

2. ENVIRONMENTAL ZONES• Established environmental zones and prohibited heavy-duty

diesel vehicles older than 8years to enter the city centre.

3. PUBLIC TRANSPORT• All track vehicles run on

energy from wind, water and bio mass.

• All inner city bus lines run on renewable fuels. (ethanol, biogas and biodiesel)

• Biogas bus= cleanest fuel, produced locally

• More efficient engines, lower maintenance costs

4. MAKE BICYCLE ATTRACTIVE• Construct an infrastructure

that enhances the availability and accessibility of bicycle paths

• 760km of bicycle lanes• To facilitate individuals to

shift from car and public transport to bike

• Bike & Ride- an internet based platform where information could be found regarding the fastest and safest bicycle paths through the city.

5. CLEAN VEHICLES• Political measures and economic incentives for

environmentally sound vehicles – such as reduced parking fees, subsidies and exemption from congestion charges

• offer free parking for environmentally sound vehicles, owned by residents or companies using their vehicle for business-related traffic.

• ‘eco car subsidy‘ of SEK 10 000 for every private individual that bought an environmentally friendly car between 1st of April 2007 and 3rd of June 2009.

• encourage more people to buy fuel efficient cars that run on renewable fuels

6. COMPLIANCE CHECK

The City Line Project, or the Green Tunnel• Between Riddarholmen and Söder

Mälarstrand, the City Line will run through a submerged concrete tunnel. As a green project, the City Line includes the purification of waste water; noise reduction through sound-attenuating tracks; the use of synthetic diesel, which provides users with clean air; and the recycling of excavated rocks

ADVANTAGES• Tend to reduce congestion, increase

accessibility and reduce environmental effects.• Car traffic is estimated to be reduced by 30%

during the rush hours• Decreasing of emissions of CO2 and NO2,

transport energy consumption as well as noise level

• Increasing of bicycling, walking and use of public transport.

Waste Management•low emissions of resources•efficient use of the waste resource

Waste Management 1999-2010

Treatment of Municipal waste

• recycling stations are as a rule no more than 300 metres from any residential area

– Newspapers -paper mass– bottles are reused or melted into new items– plastic containers become plastic raw material– food is composted and becomes soil or biogas– Wasted water is purified to the extent of being potable. – Pharmacists accept leftover medicine– larger waste (used TV or broken furniture) to recycling

centres on the outskirts of the cities.

Recycle

From waste to energy• first incineration plant was set up in Stockholm in

1904

vacuum controlled underground transportation of solid waste

•users throw waste into ordinary inlets•the bags are stored temporarily•full inlets are then emptied at regular intervals through a network of underground pipes.

Treatment of Food Waste

Treatment of Household-Waste

Waste water treatment•Use advance technology- removing Nitrogen and phosphorous

•Biogas is produced• Biogas - mixture of different gases produced by the

breakdown of organic matter in the absence of oxygen• upgraded for use in public buses, private cars and taxis

•The excess heat in the sewage water is recovered for domestic heating

•No water is reused.

Hazardous waste• Collected by Haz-Mat’truck • mobile collection point which stops at 110 different

stations around the city (460 stops per year).
