Faraday´s law states that when a conductor (fluid) moves through a magnetic field of given strength, a voltage is produced.

E = magnitude of the voltageB = magnetic field densityD = pipe diameter v = average velocity of the medium

Operating principle

Page 4: Electromagnetic Flow Meters Overview (Badger Meter)

.

During the summer of the year 1831

Michael Faraday found the principle of

induction.

Already at that time he tried to

measure the flow velocity of the river

Thames. Unfortunately at that time

without success.

History

Page 5: Electromagnetic Flow Meters Overview (Badger Meter)

.

The first working MAG meter was built in 1939 by the Swiss monk

Bonaventura Thurlemann in the monastery of Engelberg in Switzerland.

History

Page 6: Electromagnetic Flow Meters Overview (Badger Meter)

.

Beginning of the 1950´s a Swiss company recognized the big advantage of the physical law of Faraday for flow metering and gave a research contract to the famous Batelle Institute in Geneva to develop a flow meter based on this basics.

All existing meters on the market are still based on this first construction.

In 1962 the first MAG was delivered to a Swiss water authority.
