INTRODUCTIONA bedside monitor is a major device in a Patient Monitoring System (PMS) and is used to display vital signals of a patient. •Electrocardiograph•Non-evasive blood pressure•Body temperature

These VITAL SIGNS are important indicators of the body’s response to stressors and form part of a routine physical assessment

PROBLEM STATEMENT Lack of technological advancement in this part of the world makes it difficult for these equipment to be produced here and so they have to be imported. Due to the high cost of importation and installation, most institutions find it difficult to afford these equipment therefore local production has to be given a higher priority than importation. This project is intended to design and construct a bedside monitor suitable for use in hospitals with the environmental conditions of this part of the world at a lesser price.

AIM & OBJECTIVES

The aim of this project is to design and construct a bedside monitor which will be linked to a central patient monitoring station by a local area network (LAN) for use in intensive care units and wards of hospitals

Page 7: ECG Bedside Monitor

AIM & OBJECTIVES• Use clinical standard probes to ensure accurate

capture of heart waves.• Observation of a Patients Vital Signs.• Signal analysis and Interpretation of the ECG

waveform by using MATLAB.• Creating an Interface for Patients Monitored

signal to be display and store on computers.• Development of Health records of Patients.• Connection of LAN switches to all ECGs for

central patient monitoring.

METHODOLOGY

The basic procedures that will be used in accomplishing this project are as stated below:

PHASE 1: SYSTEM REQUIREMENTMake use of standard ECG probes.Connecting Instrumentation amplifier (AD620) at all of ECG leads. Temperature sensor, and Signal analysis will be used to determine the Blood pressure.

PHASE 2: DESIGNDeveloping a computer-based analysis and device interfacing, using MATLAB and Egasoft.Making use of Patients health record software. (CPM+).

METHODOLOGY

PHASE 3: CONSTRUCTION AND TESTING.The Device is constructed and TestedCisco catalyst 24, a router will ensure local connections from different Bedside Monitor to the center monitoring unit.

EXPECTED RESULTS

It is expected at the completion of the project that bedside monitor that reads heart rate, blood pressure and body temperature and displays the result on a computer is constructed.

This will be suitable for Effective and Efficient Patient Monitoring System.
