Introduction

Big Data

Page 4: BIM SHOW LIVE 14 - Attempting to comply Level 2 BIM as an SME QS working on small value projects

What is 5D, and the role of a 5D QS

• What is 5D to Henry Riley– Quantification from models– NRM Standards– Library & Database Management– Common Data Environment– Benchmarking

• Role of the QS– 1st user of Data– Quality Assurance– Information Manager

Page 5: BIM SHOW LIVE 14 - Attempting to comply Level 2 BIM as an SME QS working on small value projects

What does level 2 BIM mean to a QS• PAS 1192:2– Design Focused, not QS focused– Data user ability and standards– How do we comply with documents

• Estimate using model quantities– Design in line with Cost Stages

• Pricing Document– Understand Procurement route

What does level 2 BIM mean to a QS – Do we Comply• Process for Common Data Environment• Non graphical data - COBie - BS1192-4• 2d PDFs• BIM Commercial suite• 3D models - native format

How did we get started as an SME without the huge resource of a large company• Existing BIM user within company• Client demand• Trial projects– Small value

• Joined BIM4SME– Now Vice Chair

The benefit of starting small

• Less Room for mistakes• Learn quickly– Software– Terminology– Get outputs and can review

Developments in BIM

• Representation from the QS profession within the development of Standards

• Closer alignment between the production of design information and the needs of QS’ for cost planning

• Sharing of experiences – www.bim4sme.org

• Say no to “UK BIM Crew” – its not helpful and prevents wider adoption

Page 17: BIM SHOW LIVE 14 - Attempting to comply Level 2 BIM as an SME QS working on small value projects

Keeping It Simple• Data Should be easy to interpret• Data should be easy to analyse• Plain language names• Consistent naming– For like objects– To separate similar but DIFFERENT objects

• Say no to overcomplicated models and need to spend time re-structuring data

• Involve the QS in Day 1 decisions
