Introduction

Who I am and Why I'm Writing about LinkedIn I believe that excellence is achieved through discipline and professionalism. I believe a part of being a disciplined individual is developing an open and resourceful mind. Over the last decade, social networking has become the norm of browsing the World Wide Web. In 2009, Facebook skyrocketed to global use and the social networking site has practically become a part of virtually every American user's daily routine.

Past and present tense used together, incorrectly. Should be either “In 2009, Facebook skyrocketed…” or “since 2009, Facebook has Skyrocketed…”

What is LinkedIn?Simply put, LinkedIn is the largest professional network on the World Wide Web. It trades under the symbol “LNKD” on the New York Stock Exchange. Essentially, LinkedIn allows you to exchange knowledge, resources, career information, and business opportunities with other 200 million individuals. The site functions as a virtual résumé, storage facility, a directory, and even instant messaging for business-related topics. It provides a way to increase your visibility within your professional arena or marketplace, and provides you with a chance to contact individuals who can potentially take you further in your professional life.

This sounds like the author doesn’t know how to apply financial terminology correctly and therefore doesn’t know their subject matter. Consider instead “It trades under the symbol “LNKD” on the New York Stock Exchange.” Things trade on stock exchanges, not in them. Also, “circularting out there in the trades” doesn’t make sense, cut it completely.

I believe that the proper use of social networking comes from cultivating good habits. Knowing what NOT to do reinforces proper usage of LinkedIn. I have listed these ten DON'Ts that you should remember:

Strengthening Your ConnectionsSocial networking is all about people. When it comes down to it, LinkedIn is simply a tool for all to use to get in touch with individuals in your niche. The factor that truly contributes to your professional growth is how you deal with people, and how you can offer value to them so that they will use your brand, product, and/or service to fulfill their needs. Thus, I'd like you to keep a few things in mind to strengthen your LinkedIn Connections.

Take advantage of the past affiliationsConnect with former colleagues, managers, or supervisors.

Add people after a meetingIf you have personally met certain people after a business meeting or a networking event, I recommend adding them right away.

Make use of the “People You May Know” featureYou can see this if you view the right-hand corner of the home page.

About the AuthorDominic Wolff is an author, business owner and traveller (or as he likes to call it, a globe trotter). A native from Idaho, Dominic became interested in the mechanics of business from a very young age. From those early days of selling candy bars to running a multi-state company today, Dominic has always been on the lookout for systems that would improve his productivity and allow him more free time to enjoy his hobbies. He frequently writes articles about personal productivity for business publications.

He believes that having a structure in place for work and life can mean the difference between being in control and merely coping. An avid collector of fine red wines, he also owns a small wine boutique stocking only the finest of Washington, Oregon and Idaho wines.
