Community ReportSP

READ Pickering has One of the

Most Used Library Systems in the Province!

The Ontario Public Libraries Act directs Council to appoint a Library Board which is charged with operating a comprehensive, efficientpubliclibraryservicethatmeetsthecommunity’sunique needs. In Pickering, 10 appointed members of the library Board (8 citizens and 2 councillors) meet monthly in a public forum to ensure that the public is being well-served.

I invite all residents of Pickering to attend regular meetings of the Board as well as focus groups which explore various decisions that the Board must make such as a Central Library Expansion or a new Strategic plan. If you are not able to attend the events, you can provide feedback via email to the [email protected] or you can speak to any Board member at various community events that we attend. I am very pleased to report that the performance of the Pickering Public Library has been exemplary over the last year. We continue to be one of the most used, most award

winning libraries in the province, as our performance measures can attest.

As we move into a changing future, our Library will continue to evolve to meet the changing demographic and technology needs of our community retaining those essential principles of public libraries – the ability to inspire, connect, and enrich all members of our community, which make the Pickering Public Library the heart of an engaged and creative, 21st century city.

People! Ideas! Communities! Information! Canada’s libraries foster connections between people, ideas, communities, and information.

We are pleased to announce that October is Canadian Library Month and October 14th - 20th is Ontario Public Library Week. Visit your Library and celebrate with us. There will be lots happening all week including a draw to win an eReader!

This year’s theme, Libraries Connect is a great reminder of just how essential libraries are in the interconnected world in which we live. Libraries are at the centre of our communities, providing a public space for people to meet, learn, connect and grow. From coast to coast, libraries help direct the flow of information and resources. They are places of endless opportunity and provide Canadians with equitable access to important resources.

Every day, year round, libraries across the country are committed to expanding and developing their resources in order to link patrons with the services they need and foster connections between people, ideas and communities. Print collections, reference services, public programmes, downloadable books, music, movies, Internet access, electronic databases, eReaders, gaming and social media are just some of the services libraries offer to help people find what they need.

Libraries, including public, academic, school and special libraries, make an enormous contribution to the personal, professional, academic and creative growth of Canadians. As well, Library and Archives Canada, the country’s national library, collects and preserves Canada’s documentary heritage. Let’s all celebrate Canadian Library Month in October 2012 because… Libraries Connect! Visit your library today.
