Dear Julie,

Last year I had the pleasure of presenting you to the students of Francisco

de Holanda Secondary School. I was touched by your contagious personality

and profound kindness with some of the students and my niece, when you got

them the autographs of “One Direction”. Because of that, I’m still the “coolest”

aunt ever.

At the time, our school library purchased some copies of “Jodie and the

Library Card”. This year, I have a tough group of students taking a vocational

course. They aren’t very motivated to study or read, so I decided to take the

books to class and together we read some chapters of the book.

They loved it and whenever they didn’t understand something they just

flipped the book over to read the Portuguese version. It was one of the first

times that I saw them interested in something academic, considering it fun.

I knew you would be paying us another visit, so the students decided to

make a small tribute to the book which delighted them for several lessons.

Of course, not all the students collaborated, as there were supposed to be

more drawings (19 in total) and some are really very simple, even child-like.

But I decided to go ahead with the booklet of illustrations because of the

effort and pleasure of the participants. Furthermore, I believe that we should

reward positive attitudes if we want our students to grow as people and the

truth is most of them really did their best.

Thank you for being such an inspiration and getting students to discover

the pleasure of reading books.

Best regards

Cristina Tomé
