Mostly Warner bros companies. Proliferation

A broad range of distributors also means more hype. Things are also easier to sell due to the fact that Warner bros are a highly respected companies and they cut out the middle man of selling their product to the marketers by owning those companies too

Issues Raised by media ownership• The screenplay originally

belonged to Travis Beacham• Sold to Legendary Pictures and

given to Guillermo Del Toro. • A variety of companies then

funded the film, including a great deal of Warner Bros companies

• Media ownership issues raised due to the fact that the film has been bought by Warner Bros – rather than sold – and so creative licensing will be restricted and the creators will have less control over the final product.

There may also be an issue with piracy and illegally downloading the film due to a rise in streaming and

downloading from sites such as videoweed and putlocker.

Massive media conglomerates such as Warner Bros and 20th Century Fox are beginning to combat this cyber intrusion by leaking out information and media via

twitter and websites – and are working on strengthening copyright laws.

Page 5: Warner bros

Technology introduced in recent years• The film was shot using Red Epic

cameras (Shoots at a better pixel quality and are more portable.)

• Miniature effect (Where smaller scale models are used to portray something much bigger, as seen in the space ships in Star Wars)

• Live explosives, springboards, water pipes and other props were used whilst filming inside the jaeger’s connpad: A very expensive process and very time consuming.

• Warner Bros and Legendary pictures have the budget for films of this scale, whereas Submarine relied on funding from Channel four just to kick start the programme.

• Filmed in digital, meaning that the film can easily be edited using SFX technology. Easier to transfer, copy and distribute (This may cause issues with video piracy).

• Later decided to change the film into 3D• Twitter, Iphone apps, Facebook etc. also

helped with distributing the product and creating massive hype. This leads to viral videos, a greater proliferation of media, content and further advertising.

Interactivity, which inspires more hype.Downloads, galleries, games, and a shop

for merchandise. A broad range of distributors also means more hype.

Things are also easier to sell due to the fact that Warner bros are a highly

respected companies and they cut out the middle man of selling their product to

the marketers by owning those companies, too.

Cross-media convergence and syngery in distribution

Significance of proliferation in hardware & context for institutions & Audiences

• Apps, Tumblr, Facebook• Very interactive• There are websites, info, games,

activities, wiki pages, even a video game has been announced

• Filmed in digital• Lots of Visual effects means lots

of job and money – Hired oscar winning visual effects workers from movies such as The Pirates of the Caribbean and Star Wars

Page 8: Warner bros

Technological convergence for institutions and audiences

Facebook, twitter, tumblr etc.

Youtube

Apps: Jaeger designerMore interactivity for the audience creates further hype for the film, whether it’s newly released or a cult classic. Also links into proliferation

Purpose: To entertain and to advertise. Independent films will not have this level of marketing, meaning that more people will watch Pacific Rim as opposed to a lower budget film.

Page 9: Warner bros

Issues raised by targeting of national and local audiences by international/global institutions

• Multi cultural/multi-racial cast and crew; very appealing to a broad audience (Guillermo is Mexican).

• Distributed to , Argentina, Germany, France,UK, Japan, Netherlands, Singapore, USA

• The film is set in China, and so might appeal to a Chinese audience.
