What is our final product?What is our final product?

As a group our proposal is to design, for an environmentally friendly urban environment for Australia of 2050 and beyond is a compacted and a producing Vineyard.

The reasoning in why we had chosen a Vineyard as our environmentally urban environment for Australia of 2050 and beyond is because:

To revolutionise the production of grapes by growing commercially in the ‘heart’ of Sydney. Therefore limiting the amount of pollution that is made from transporting long distances.

To be able to revolutionise the new way in creating wine.

To stay away from drought affected areas and go to a place where a good source of water can be found.

To challenge ourselves in making something unique and thought quite impossible to do.

To make a design which gives back to the community in many ways.

After large amounts of research conducted by the group, the group

has decided to place the Vineyard at Nullawarra Avenue, Concord West

Why Concord West? Why Concord West? The reasoning in why we have

decided to place our Vineyard in Nullawarra Avenue, located at Concord West is because:

It’s in the ‘heart’ of Sydney and is just located 15 – 20 minutes away from the CBD.

Limiting the amount of pollution produced by long distance travel.

Large water supply is located right next to it, which is the Parramatta River.

There is a good large water supply which is located right next to it, which is the Parramatta River.

Currently there is a large amount of privately owned land which is mostly vacant which can be bought out but at an expensive price.

The climate in the Concord West area has warm summers and cool winters which is perfect for growing grapes.

In the year 2050 and beyond our vineyard will work by:

Money Source: From the sales of producing grapes and wine, retreat and producing energy from renewable energy.

Compact: Due urban growth, limited amount of land space but have enough space to produce grapes.

Environmentally Friendly: Reduce our carbon footprint.

What is the land size? What is the land size? The proposed area land located at

Nullawarra Avenue at Concord West is 19,400metres squared. Here is our usage of the land:

- Wind Turbines: 6,000 meters squared- Green House: 7,000 meters squared- Retreat: 5,500 meters squared- Shed: 400 meters squared- Free Space: 1000 meters squared

producing wine and selling grapes, grape vines are needed. The variety of grapes suit the Australian climate and we will grow in our proposed vineyard are:

The size of the three greenhouses in which it will contain the grape vines will be around 2,333 metres squared.

The greenhouses is the area in which the four different types of grapes will grow in. The greenhouse will be made out of:

Tempered Glass: 2-3 times stronger than regular glass.

by being placed onto aluminium frames which are structured as steps.

Therefore being able to gain the maximum amount of sunlight.

The grapes will be harvested by hand-picking the grapes.

RetreatRetreat

A retreat will be made on to the vineyard. It’s attraction would be the vineyard and how it is not far away from city life but it would feel like it is.

The retreat will allow a group of no more than six to stay.

the retreat will be made out of:Recycled Bricks: 15,000 - 20% cheaper than new bricks.Insulation on the walls and ceiling. - Keeps the retreat cool in summer

Flooring:- A recycled heartwood flooring

which is more resistant to decay.

Wine CellarWine Cellar

A wine cellar will be made beneath the retreat. The wine cellar will feature:

20 reused wine barrels with a capacity of 320 litres. Cost: $3,300

Strong Aluminium Framing Insulation in the walls of the cellar.- Keep wine in at the same

temperature.

ShedShed

The covering and the frame of the shed will be constructed out of Recycled Aluminium.

The retreat will feature:The latest ‘state of the art’

appliances with 4 – 5 Energy Stars Rating.

LED Lamps:- Lower electricity consumption.- Produces more light.- Mercury – free.Water efficient taps and

showerheads.

Installing Renewable Installing Renewable EnergyEnergy

Installing renewable energy is very expensive but by implementing them, it is possible that it can pay off itself. Our goal was to make something environmentally friendly and by implementing renewable energy is part of it. The types of renewable energy which we have implemented on our design proposal are:

Wind EnergyWind Energy

In our design proposal for our Vineyard, We have decided to implement four wind turbines onto our land. Our chosen type of turbine is capable of making around 20kW.

The cost currently for one turbine after large amounts of research, is currently around $59,000.

Therefore the total cost of the wind turbines are $236,000. We believe that in the year 2050 and beyond wind turbines will:

Create less noise due to improved technology.

Be cheaper because of technology improvement and a government rebate.

Create more electricity.

Our proposal of the area in which we place our turbines, will be located towards the

back of our proposed land. This is because we can:

Limit the amount of noise being produced by the wind turbines, so then it cannot be heard by residents and visitors of the hotel.

Limit disturbance to the residential area by making it not fully visible to residents if they see it as an ‘eye-saw’

Gain the most amount of energy from wind because there is no obstruction in front of the wind turbines.

Solar PanelsSolar PanelsIn our design proposal for our Vineyard,

We have decided to implement twenty solar panels which will be implemented onto our hotel and cellar rooftops. The dimensions for one solar panel are 790 x 404 x 23mm and weigh just 8kg.

Together the solar panels can produce 4kW.

The cost currently for the panels needed in order to produce 4kW is $38,000.

The reason in why we have sufficient amounts of energy being produced by wind turbines and solar power is because:

To provide electricity which can be used to manage temperatures in the greenhouses.

To power and provide electricity to the retreat

To provide electricity back to the main power grid which powers mostly the public in NSW. This therefore means that money will be made by providing electricity to the public.

To reduce our carbon footprint by not using electricity made by coal.

Urban Growth & DeclineUrban Growth & DeclineThe issue of urban growth and

decline is affecting everyone. Currently the population of Sydney

is approximately 4.2 million. By 2050 the population of Sydney is predicted to rise 6 million people.

This will cause more food to be consumed and then even more waste be produced.

That is why, there is a need for a vineyard in the year 2050 and beyond because it provides:

Fresh food to the growing NSW population.

Close to the fast growing population of NSW, so it can provide food which is more fresh.

An increase of tourism to Australia, means that more rooms need to be made to shelter these people.

Air QualityAir QualityThe air quality currently in the Concord

West area, in which are vineyard is being built in, is quite polluted. This is because:

The Parramatta River contains many wetlands with large amounts of mangroves therefore creating a ‘salty’ stench

Contains a residential area.Located near a main road and motorway

which is Homebush Bay Drive and Motorway 4.

One kilometre to the east of the purposed vineyard are factories.

To improve the air quality the vineyard will eliminate some pollution by:

The growing of grape vines takes away the carbon dioxide.

By not using coal-made electricity.

Growing a large amount of trees.

The water source for our vineyard would be coming from the:

Water Pollution: Water Pollution: ContaminationContaminationThe Parramatta River has been polluted

due to illegal dumping of toxics and chemicals into the river. These include:

Dioxins LeadMetals and many more.In order to make this our water supply

we have decided to use water filtration systems which can be used to filter water to water grape vines of the vineyard.

The main source of water for our vineyard will be from the Parramatta River. We expect to filter at least 400 litres of water from the Parramatta River everyday. Acknowledging the current state of the Parramatta River, with its pollution, we believe that it would be reduced but still not suitable to straight away give it to the grape vines.

Therefore we have decided to filter this water which will cost $50,000 for the filtering system and $2,000 per annum to fix and exchange filters.

This water will be filtered to the level of only it being used for the irrigation of the grape vines.

Storing water in the year 2050 & beyond will be a major issue. When storing water, we will use a rain water tank which can store the water.

has already been implemented such as in Marrickville, Penrith and Campbelltown City Council, but some others do not. That is why we have made three bins which are:

Recycle Bin – Recyclable items such as bottles & paper.

Natural Waste: Food scraps, leaves, lawn clippings cardboard and newspaper.

Create good compost from degradable products by using deposits from the natural waste bin.

Recycle and reduce our environmental impact.

In conclusion we believe that this is very much possible in the year 2050 and beyond. In the 21st century

This proposal is suitable and sustainable for the area it is made for and it will be possible. Although it is expensive, it will be still cheaper than the strong effects that global warming has on the world if we don’t act now.
