● New groups can't do this on their own, at first - they need a skilled, neutral facilitator. Facilitation is a tool – learn it.

Engaging with outside communities

1. Look for candidate communities based on your interest, by listings or word of mouth. Arrange to attend one of the upcoming community events, real world or online.

2. At the event, listen, watch, and observe. Is the event addressing topics of interest? Are the interactions polite or curt, businesslike or disorganized, friendly or rude?

3. Does the community notice you? Does it invite you to introduce yourself? Does a member make a point of "friending" you, or giving you a contact card?

4. After the event, you should be in a position to decide whether to continue with this community. Remember, a negative experience “is not personal." Do not hesitate to try again with a new candidate community.
