There were about 15 groups of Lac Viet tribesmen living mainly in the northern highland and delta and a dozen Au Viet groups of tribesmen living in Viet Bac, the northern region of old Vietnam

The first drum was invented more than three thousands years ago in northern Vietnam by the Lac Viet, the remote ancestors of the Vietnamese people. It played a vital role in the ancient society and was present in most important activities of Lac Viet civilization. Made for religious ceremonies, rallying men for war, or for other secular roles. The drum was decorated with rich and well composed images of objects, humans and animals.
