1. What Is an Adjective?• An adjective is a word that describes a noun or a

pronoun.• An adjective tells what kind or how many.

The yellow butterfly landed on the grass.

Yellow is an adjective because it tells what kind of butterfly. Not always, but often, adjectives come before the word they modify.

2. Articles and Demonstratives

• A, an, and the are special adjectives called articles.

• A and an refer to any person, place, or thing. The refers to a particular person, place, or thing.

• This, that, these, and those are demonstrative adjectives. They tell which one.

This clown fish is swimming faster than that fish.

This and that are both demonstrative adjectives.

3. Comparing with Adjectives

• Add –er to one-syllable adjectives to compare two.• Add –est to one-syllable adjectives to compare

more than two.• Use more and most, less and least, not –er and –

est with most longer adjectives.
