The Speech Sound Camera Children learn to listen for the smaller parts in words (speech sounds, not syllables) ie developing phonemic awareness. “ If I took a picture, with the SSP Speech Sound Camera, of the speech sound ‘fff’, what might it look like?” Children close eyes and visualise. All of the pictures of speech sounds (speech sound pics) are shown in the Speech Sound Clouds, which are explored and often adapted (eg for accents) throughout their learning journey. Children are able to understand the concept of there being more than one sound pic for every speech sound (except ‘a’ as in cat) within weeks of using the SSP Approach.
