PRINCIPLES OF LEARNINGFrom Horne and Pine

(1990)

• The principles of learning provide

additional insight into what makes people

learn most effectively. The principles have

been discovered, tested, and used in

practical situations.

• By knowing some principles on how

learning takes place, we will be guided

on how to teach.

Page 5: The PRINCIPLES of LEARNING (Principles of Teaching 1)

1. LEARNING IS AN EXPERIENCE WHICH

OCCURS INSIDE THE LEARNER AND IS

ACTIVATED BY THE LEARNER.

Page 6: The PRINCIPLES of LEARNING (Principles of Teaching 1)

NO ONE DIRECTLY TEACHES ANYONE

ANYTHING of SIGNIFICANCE…

‘’People LEARN

what they

WANT to

LEARN,

they SEE what

they WANT to

SEE,

and HEAR what

they WANT to

HEAR’’.

Page 7: The PRINCIPLES of LEARNING (Principles of Teaching 1)

2. LEARNING IS THE DISCOVERY OF THE PERSONAL

MEANING AND RELEVANCE OF

IDEAS.

Page 8: The PRINCIPLES of LEARNING (Principles of Teaching 1)

3. LEARNING (BEHAVIORAL CHANGE) IS

A CONSEQUENCE OF EXPERIENCE.

• People become responsible when they

have really assumed responsibility,

they become independent when they

have experienced independent

behavior, they become able when they

have experienced success, they begin

to feel important when they are

important to somebody, they feel like

someone likes them.

COLLABORATIVE PROCESS.

COOPERATION FOSTERS LEARNING.

Page 10: The PRINCIPLES of LEARNING (Principles of Teaching 1)

PROCESS.

Page 11: The PRINCIPLES of LEARNING (Principles of Teaching 1)

6. LEARNING IS SOMETIMES A

PAINFUL PROCESS

Page 12: The PRINCIPLES of LEARNING (Principles of Teaching 1)

7. ONE OF THE RICHEST

RESOURCES OF LEARNING IS

THE LEARNER HIMSELF.

Page 13: The PRINCIPLES of LEARNING (Principles of Teaching 1)

8. THE PROCESS OF LEARNING IS EMOTIONAL

AS WELL AS INTELLECTUAL.

Page 14: The PRINCIPLES of LEARNING (Principles of Teaching 1)

9. THE PROCESS OF PROBLEM

SOLVING AND LEARNING ARE

HIGHLY UNIQUE AND

INDIVIDUAL.

Page 15: The PRINCIPLES of LEARNING (Principles of Teaching 1)

‘’LEARNING WITHOUT THOUGH

IS A SNARE, THOUGHT

WITHOUT LEARNING IS A

DANGER’’

LAWS OF LEARNING

LAW OF EFFECT

Learning is strengthened when

accompanied by a pleasant or satisfying

feeling.

Learning is weakened when associated

with an unpleasant feeling.

Learning takes place properly when it

results in satisfaction and the learner

derives pleasure out of it.

By Thorndike (1932)

Page 17: The PRINCIPLES of LEARNING (Principles of Teaching 1)

LAW OF EXERCICE

Things most often repeated are best

remembered.

Students do not learn complex tasks

in a singles session.

Page 18: The PRINCIPLES of LEARNING (Principles of Teaching 1)

LAW OF READINESS

Individuals learn best when they are

physically, mentally and emotionally

ready to learn, and they do not learn

well if they see no reason for

learning

Page 19: The PRINCIPLES of LEARNING (Principles of Teaching 1)

LAW OF PRIMACY

Things learned first create a strong

impression.

‘’What is TAUGHT must be RIGHT the FIRST
