Archimedes

Archimedes (pronounced ar-ka-meed-eez) was born around 287 B.C. in the Greek city-state of Syracuse on the island of Sicily.

Archimedes

He was known as mathematician, physicist, engineer, inventor and astronomer.

Archimedes

Archimedes was the son of Phidias.

an astronomer known for his investigations into the sizes and distances of the sun and the moon.

Older Life of Archimedes• Archimedes was

educated at the museum in Alexandria Egypt where historians believe that he may have studied under the former students of Euclid, another ancient mathematician famous for geometry.

Older life of Archimedes• Archimedes didn’t get

any job, he just spends his whole life to invent, discover and experience and devoted his life to the study of mathematics.

• It seemed that it was the devotion to King Hieron II that induced Archimedes to divert his mathematical studies to his engineering skills.

When the Sicily island got attacked by Roman army, he tried to help the Sicily by inventing new weapons.

Page 11: The life of archimedes and his inventions

• The City was Besieged by the Romans for three years beginning in 214 BCE.

Death of Archimedes• He died around 212

B.C. at the age of 75.• Some people may

already know that Archimedes was killed by Roman soldier. In a myth Archimedes was so absorbed in his new invention and he didn’t know that Sicily island was conquered.

Death of Archimedes• Roman general said to soldiers

that do not kill Archimedes and bring him alive however when the soldier found him and tried to bring him to Roman camp he said the famous word “do not disturb my circles” so the soldier killed him. When the general heard that, the general killed that soldier.

The Tomb of Archimedes• The tomb of Archimedes

carried a sculpture illustrating his favorite mathematical proof, consisting of a sphere and a cylinder of the same height and diameter. Archimedes had proven that the volume and surface area of the sphere are two thirds that of the cylinder including its bases.

The second Objective

Illustrate the different inventions developed by

Archimedes.

BOUYANCYKing Hieron II had given the goldsmith a particular amount of gold to melt down and make into a crown. When the crown was made and returned to the king, the king was suspicious that the goldsmith had stolen some of the gold and replaced it with an equal weight of silver.

The king turned to Archimedes for help…

BOUYANCYArchimedes happened to go to the bath, and on getting a tub observed that the more water ran out over the tub. As this pointed out the way to explain the case in question, he jumped out of the tub and rushed home naked, crying with a loud voice that he had found what he was seeking; for he, as he ran, shouted repeatedly in Greek, ‘EUREKA, EUREKA,’ meaning “I have found it.”

THE LAW OF LEVER • Archimedes did not invent the lever, however

he gave an explanation about the principle• Earlier descriptions of the lever are found in

the Peripatetic school of the followers of Aristotle.

• According to Pappus of Alexandria, Archimedes' work on levers caused him to remark: "Give me a place to stand on, and I will move the Earth.“

• Plutarch describes how Archimedes designed block-and-tackle pulley systems, allowing sailors to use the principle of leverage to lift objects that would otherwise have been too heavy to move.

ARCHIMEDES SCREW• A machine for raising water, allegedly

invented by Archimedes for removing water from the hold of a large ship. One form consists of a circular pipe enclosing a helix and inclined at an angle of about 45 degrees to the horizontal with its lower end dipped in the water; rotation of the device causes the water to rise in the pipe. Other forms consist of a helix revolving in a fixed cylinder or a helical tube wound around a shaft.

ARCHIMEDES SCREW• Modern screw pumps, consisting

of helices rotating in open inclined troughs, are effective for pumping sewage in wastewater treatment plants. The open troughs and the design of the screws permit the passage of debris without clogging.
