Clivia is one of the more primitive genera of the Amaryllidaceae. These have neither bulbs nor rhizomes, but possess an abundance of thick rope-like roots. They are evergreen, and have predominantly orange, red or salmon colored flowers. Clivia are native to southern Africa

Clivia miniata is both beautiful and indestructible. Deep green, straplike leaves arch 2-3 feet above the crown, forming a graceful fountain. In early spring (and often twice a year for us), the plant bursts forth with clusters of orange, Lily-shaped blooms that are carried on strong stems and last for several weeks. Clivias thrive even in a north window and require very little care, growing larger and more impressive with age. They are ideal plants for a second home. Our plants are of blooming size, and most will flower within 3-4 months of arrival. One plant in a 7-inch terra-cotta pot with saucer.

Clivia is also called “Winter Lily” because of its winter blooming. Native of subtropical areas of South Africa, Clivia is now the most popular lily houseplants decorating places of all over the world. It had arrived in England in 1852 and its name is of Duchess of Northumberland, lady Charlotte-Florentine-Clive, Queen Victoria’s governess.
