RISKS INVOLVED IN INTEGRATING THE INTERNET INTO THE K-12 CURRICULUM

Summary:This article gives an overview of many

instances that can happen when a child is accessing the web. This ranges from online predators to it just being used as a waste of time. Bernie Poole does a great job of providing solutions to many of these foreseen problems. He suggests that we discuss these issues with our students, and let them know what is out there. Furthermore, having software that blocks websites that have been labeled as unacceptable will help eliminate some things that are unwanted.

say in this article that, if a teacher is not well prepared to integrate the internet into their lesson, then that is when students can find themselves in risky situations. This would be by ending up on websites that are not safe or viewing things that are not appropriate.

REFLECTION ON: RISKS INVOLVED IN INTEGRATING THE INTERNET INTO THE K-12 CURRICULUM I find Poole to be very

helpful with his ideas of how to limit the risks associated with the internet. As long as we are pro-active we should allow our students the opportunity to enhance their learning online.

If a child is caught misusing the web, we need to talk to them about it because simply “punishing a student by restricting digital access is like taking away the textbook in a math, social studies, or English lit class. Technology access is now crucial to the daily school experience for students.”

It shows, what the article was saying earlier how by 2014 online classes will enhance by 3 million. Thereby, physical classrooms getting smaller.

I find this article to be very eye-opening. I have only taken one course entirely online. From personal experience, I find the physical classroom to fit me the best. I like to be able to have classmates and teachers right there at my finger tips. Lucky for me, I will be done with classes as a student by 2014. However, I will have started my profession as a teacher and it will be interesting to see how that impacts me as a teacher and the relationships I will have with my own students.

Summary:This article tells a story of how technology was used in an outstanding way by seventh graders. The seventh grade teacher Noel Tobiasen asked her computer savvy colleague, Kevin Jarrett, for his opinion on an easy but powerful assignment for her students.

summer vacation, Noel Tobiasen was not expecting what she got. Her seventh graders had outdone her expectations of this assignment by far. With only little direction, these students had created their own elaborate websites with great graphics and writings. Some even continued working on them over their vacation.

REFLECTION ON: IMPROVING THE WORLD AROUND US WITH EACH PASSING DAY This article shows,

that the internet has great capabilities. No matter how anxious your students may get, as long as you provide them with something fun, a bit challenging and very rewarding, the results can blow you away. Just like is said in the article “Less us, more them.”

STUDENT

After reading through these articles, it is evident that some people are very concerned with the risks the internet brings. However, is parent and teachers are pro-active and take the steps needed to keep our children safe, the benefits of the internet are amazing.

I have shown you ways in which the internet can have great success. So it would not be good to keep our children from the good it brings. There are some many things the internet can teach them that books cannot.

Please as future teachers, allow your students every chance to take part in the technology. Just make sure you take the proper steps to keep them safe.
