• CCSS.Math.Content.2.MD.C.8 Solve word problems involving dollar bills, quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies, using $ and ¢ symbols appropriately. Example: If you have 2 dimes and 3 pennies, how many cents do you have?

Rationale• It is imperative for diverse means of technology to be

incorporated into lessons regarding all topics to provide students with a greater assortment of learning opportunities. Applying technology to money, in particular, helps expand students’ understanding of the topic by engaging them in more interactive experiences. Exploring this topic with technology allows students to strengthen money identification skills with realistic images, practice real world application using digital manipulatives, and enhance overall knowledge by encouraging expansive research. Furthermore, technology can often clearly communicate pertinent concepts, test students’ problem-solving abilities, and genuinely assess students’ learning. Students learn according to varied styles and have access to different materials beyond the classroom; therefore, it is imperative to include technology in lessons so students’ needs as learners are effectively met and students’ comprehension of what they are taught is consistently well-rounded.

Content Explanation

• With the application of technology to lessons regarding money, students are able to have access to an extensive range of educational resources. This includes websites, references, videos, podcasts, blogs, apps, games, puzzles, worksheets, and translators. More specific examples are shared on following slides, but there are even more still waiting to be be discovered.• Following slides have pictures which can be clicked on in order to

access the original websites associated with the certain resources being showcased. These links are also cited in the slides’ notes with additional explanations of their valuable uses.• All resources presented have been previously noted as reliable

means through which to further educate students about money.

• Julie has served as a substitute, teacher, and administrator in several school systems.• Her blog, Math is Elementary,

primarily offers lesson ideas for topics commonly covered in mathematics, often with associated literature and practice activities.• Students, parents, and teachers can

reference her blog for effective ways to strengthen students’ knowledge not only of money, but other important concepts in mathematics, as well.

materials that aim to enrich the understanding of money.

• Teachers can use Pinterest to find new ways to go about effectively engaging students in their educational experiences associated to certain topics with lesson plans, bulletin boards, and practical assignments.

focus on educating students on how to spend, save, and share money.

• Students can independently listen to these podcasts to acquire greater comprehension regarding the significance of money and how it should be appropriately used.

• Parents can reinforce the realistic application of what students learn about money by encouraging them to tune in to these podcasts.

• Teachers can play these podcasts in classrooms to communicate some of the pertinent purposes behind their lessons to students.

• Money As You Learn is a development of the President’s Advisory Council on Financial Capability that aims to incorporate financial education into lessons also meeting the Common Core State Standards.• The associated website offers diverse

tools specifically for educators to build effective lessons about money from.• Integrating this topic into several

subjects will help students become more interested in it and encourage them to explore it from multiple perspectives.

suggested games, discussions, and activities enhancing their true comprehension.

• ABC Ya is dedicated to providing a collection of entertaining, but educational games, several of which focus on money.• The first example here, Learning Coins, offers

a thorough review of money counting skills before presenting an assortment of beneficial application exercises for students. • The second example here, Money Bingo,

allows students to use their money counting skills at a range of levels distinguishable by differing combinations of coins and bills, as well as board styles.

• Although this translator is not directly associated with the topic of money, it can certainly play an advantageous role in ensuring all students’ needs as individual learners are met in the classroom.• This free tool can translate words, websites, or documents between

tasks for which “payment” is to be awarded upon their completion. • Rather than receiving actual money for

each student according to specific goals set for them.• As a result, students will be working hard and

keeping track of their own fake money which can be used to purchase small rewards in the classroom store when open.
