MY THOUGHTS…MY THOUGHTS…

I’m passionate about giving back, to not only the community, but to anyone who need it.

This is not the ordinary service learning project and maybe it wont be exactly what was asked to do, but I feel good about what I did.

I work for Home Depot and this is my story!

As I said, I work for Home Depot, in Saint Cloud Florida store 6350. We are proud to be supporters of our community and cherish any opportunity to give back. We are TEAM DEPOT.

Team Depot, is a organization that give free labor (the associates) and money; for projects.

Our Target… an elementary school. We looked around our local Elementary school’s

and stumbled upon Michigan Ave Elementary. http://www.mae.osceola.k12.fl.us/

THE SCHOOL

This school has been around since about 1974 and is the oldest elementary school in Saint Cloud, that is still kicking.

It is also a proud A School, which the community supports.

But as things get old, they need more work. Which is why we came in to play. This school

needed help to be a school that was environmentally safe for all students, with or without disabilities.

Safe environments are more enriching for the students, and with the school being run down their were limitations for all students.

PROJECTS

We are doing a total of 3 projects for MAE all totaling around $2000.00

1st Clean-Up: The simplest project, but makes the biggest difference.

2nd Painting the Theater Stage: making it visually worthwhile

3rd Paving: some of the classroom only have sandy/muddy paths that get from one classroom door to another and when it rains well its mud. So we will be paving each walkway for student accessibility.

WHO AM I ? My name is Isabella Lucia. Born in

Georgia , June 9, 1988. I am 21 years old, but have a history of my own. Full time UCF student and work part time at Home Depot.

I have lived in Saint Cloud for the majority of my life. I was an Army Brat until my father retired and we made this our final destination.

My past make me who I am, But what I do now will change me for the future. I am a strong, passionate person, which I believe makes me a support: to my family, my friends, my colleagues, and soon my students .

GOALS OF OUR PROJECT

As stated we have 3 Projects to complete, but only one has been done so far.

We spent 4 days one the 1st project.1st Day: Scouted out the area and what we needed to tackle.

2nd Day: Started Pressure washing portables, side walks, picnic tables. Just anything that needed a good cleaning.3rd Day: We began to rake and pick up all the trash, debris, and pine needles from all over the playground. 4th Day: We pulled out some poles and did last minute spraying/raking. And picking up trash!

PARTICIPANT

We had a great turn out for the beginning of this 3 part project:At least 15 Home Depot Associates Helped

outA couple representatives from the

School..The V.P. and a Teacher as well as her son who attends the school.

To imagine that this was during spring break for Osceola County, it was amazing. That we could do something so great, that when the students came back they were shocked.

This project affected not just one person, not a group, but a whole school which you could say was helping out the town. It is amazing to say that I and my fellow team members help out an entire school filled with teachers, students, and many others that are effected by our project.

REFLECTION

This was a great project although not completely finished was worth every second. Some times just cleaning up and a fresh coat of a paint can really change the learning atmosphere. I really hope that by the end of this entire project we can make a big change with the school as well as with the community. This project has not only helped the community but it makes me more involved and I know its only the Start not the End!
