STEPS TOWARD ENSURING COLLEGE READINESS ON CAMPUS Britton Devier

Introduction Britton Devier is an Elmore, Ohio, educator who most

recently worked for Woodmore High School as head football coach and technology teacher. Experienced in character education, Britton Devier has provided results-focused career and college mentoring to a diversity of students.

With a multitude of distractions existing in many high school students’ lives, getting them to focus on higher education requires a coordinated administrative and faculty effort. Ideally, this involves the creation of a speakers series, which brings presenters from outside the immediate school community to share their views and experiences.

College Readiness Speakers can range from recent graduates to college

recruiters. One particularly effective approach involves bringing in those who have established successful careers in demanding professional disciplines.

Another part of the higher education readiness equation involves the creation of a college-checklist campaign that includes handouts, online resources, and a bulletin board. Shared with parents as well as students, these coordinated offerings should provide essential information on steps in the college preparation process, from SAT and ACT test taking to meeting key application deadlines.
