What‘s What‘s Matter?Matter? I Don’t know. What’s a matter with you?

MatterMatter is anything that has is anything that has mass and takes up mass and takes up

spacespace..

1.Solids

2.Liquids

3.Gases

4.Plasma

The FOUR states / phases of matter

Each phase has a different amount of energy

Page 4: States of matter touro

Solids• Solids have a definite shape (shape can NOT change) and a definite volume (volume can NOT change).

• Solids are hard because their molecules have been packed together tightly.

• The molecules vibrate in place.

• Solids have the least amount of energy.

Page 5: States of matter touro

Liquids• Liquids have indefinite shape (shape CAN change), and a definite volume (volume can NOTchange).

• The molecules are not packed together tightly. This allows liquids to flow.

• Liquids have a moderate amount of energy.

Page 6: States of matter touro

Gases•Gases have indefinite shape (shape CAN change) and indefinite volume (volume CAN change).

• Molecules are spread very far apart.

•Gases have the most energy.

Page 7: States of matter touro

Plasma•Plasma has indefinite shape (shape CAN change) and indefinite volume (volume CAN change).

• Plasma is a highly energized gas

•Plasma is very rare on Earth

•Examples are lightening and stars

Phase Changes•Phases can change from one state, or phase, of matter to another.

•As energy is added to the substance, the molecules move faster and spread apart.

Page 9: States of matter touro

Phase changes

When heat energy is added, the molecules speed up and spread apart causing a PHASE CHANGE.

SOLID LIQUID GAS

melting evaporating

Page 10: States of matter touro

Phase changes

When heat energy is removed, the molecules slow down and get closer together, causing a PHASE CHANGE.

SOLID LIQUID GAS

freezing condensation

Demonstration of melting:

A solid turns into a liquid.

Page 12: States of matter touro

Demonstration of freezing:

A liquid turns into a solid.

Page 13: States of matter touro

Demonstration of boiling:

A liquid turns into a gas.

Page 14: States of matter touro

Demonstration of condensation:

A gas turns into a liquid.

During the time that the object is going through a phase change, the temperature remains the same.
