STANDARD SYSTEM - INCHES• Look on your ruler – each of the big numbers

on it represents an inch.

Did you know?! -- The lines halfway between each number on a ruler are half-inches! So the bigger line in between 10 & 11 is ____ in.

something than lining up a few 12-in. rulers?

• That’s when you can measure in yards! Where have you heard of something measured in yards?

STANDARD SYSTEM - YARDS• Of course – in football! Every small marking on

the field is 1 yard –OR– 3 feet, because…

1 yard = 3 feet = 36 inches

What about long distance?!• What if you want to measure from your house

to a friend’s house?

STANDARD SYSTEM - MILES• A mile is a long way if you think about it - one

mile = 1,760 yd / 5,280 ft! That would take:

1,760 yardsticks…

…5,280 rulers…

…and don’t even think about measuring it with your thumbs! 1 mile = 63,360 inches!!!
