When to use

Use with sets of numbers or with text that hasrepetitive patterns that can be described with at least

two variables (row and column)

Spreadsheets in the Classroom

• Power instructional tool with application beyond the business environment;

• Manipulate numbers or data;• Creation of charts and graphs;• Sorting and filtering;• Discrimination and interpretation.

Question Number One

• Can you identify two types of data your students could collect as part of a lesson?

• Give an example

Page 7: Spreadsheets Chapter 8

Sort Data

Arrange/Classify text or numbers• Simple sorts

– Single column

• Complex sorts– One or more columns in different orders

Select Data

Example – Phone Book (database)• Row - a complete record• Column – fields of the phone book

Name ZipAddress Phone Number Email address

rows

columns

Create Charts and Graphs

• Columns and rows or numbers can be plotted on different chart and graph formats, and labels and legends are easily edited

International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) National Educational Technology

Standards for Teachers (NETS)

The primary goal of the ISTE NETS Project is to enable stakeholders in Pre K–12 education to develop national standards for educational uses of technology that facilitate school improvement in the United States. The NETS Project will work to define standards for students, integrating curriculum technology, technology support, and standards for student assessment and evaluation of technology use.

National Educational Technology Standards(NETS)

Four of the six NETS need to be addressed when using spreadsheets in the classroom

• Creativity and Innovation

• Students demonstrate creative thinking• Construct knowledge• Develop innovative products and process using

technology

Example: Students apply their existing knowledge to test or create models and simulations

Page 14: Spreadsheets Chapter 8

National Educational Technology Standards(NETS) cont.

1. Research and Information Fluency

• Students apply digital tools to gather, evaluate, and use of information

Example: Generate graphs to analyze the data in different ways or synthesize the information to present it to others.

Page 15: Spreadsheets Chapter 8

National Educational Technology Standards(NETS) cont.

1. Critical Thinking and Decision Making• Students use critical-thinking skills to:

– Plan and conduct research;– Manage projects;– Solve problems– Make informed decisions using appropriate digital

tools and resources

Example: Paste tables and charts to word processing to create a report.

Page 16: Spreadsheets Chapter 8

National Educational Technology Standards(NETS) cont.

• Technology Operations and Concepts• Students demonstrate a sound understanding

of technology concepts, systems, and operations.

Example – manipulate data to develop a deeper conceptual understanding of math operations as well as the functioning of various social, political, biological, and other types of systems.
