Spain: Our way to the European Union
Creating the UE
-1951, six European countries*→ European Coal and Steel Community
-1957→signed the Treaty of Rome→ European Economic Community (Common Market)

-1973→UK, Denmark and Ireland

-1986→Portugal and Spain (end of dictatorship)= “European of the Twelve”

Spain in the UE-It was not easy due to the economical and political conditions (it
took 20 years)
-February 9th 1962, Franco’s Government requested the admission of Spain in the European Economic Community.
-Spain had to fulfill some strict conditions: the country had to have a Democratic system of government.
-EEC’s countries rejected the suggestion→dictatorship since 1939.-Only possible to sign trade agreements: elimination of Spanish
tariffs.
Spain in the UE (i)
-Franco’s regime finished→Adolfo Suarez requested for the second time the incoporation on July 26th 1977.
-It was approved by the commission
-Economic problems: Spanish economic structure clashed (agriculture and fishing) and there were internal problems in the country.
-Spain had to meet several requirements fot the addition

-On January 1st 1986 Spain became a full member of the EEC together with Portugal.
-Since its entrance, Spain has supported all steps taken in the creation of the European common identity.
-Spain provides his knowledge of an old nation and his enthusiasm of a young town with the conviction that a future of unity is the only possible.
Consequences of the entry of Spain to the EU
The entry of Spain to the EU meant a positive change after the Civil War
Since 1991 Spain wanted to fulfill the criteria for inflation, interest rates, public debt and government spending agreed at the treaty: that is to say the convergence with Europe.
In 1998 Spain entered to the Monetary Union and adopted the euro.
