IntroductionA smart sensor is a device that takes specific inputs from the physical environment.
Smart sensors are used in different electronic devices to perform different tasks, one smart sensor can be used in many different ways.
An example of a smart sensor is the PVDF.
Activity 1: Evading Motion Detection Introduced to a motion detector containing a piezoelectric sensor.Found out that the stimulus is the change in infrared radiation.
Introduced to a motion detector containing a piezoelectric sensor. We did an experiment which was moving boiling water and ice in front of the sensor Conclusion: we noticed that the range of detection is a cone shape and at a distance of approximately 30 feet.we Also found out that the stimulus is the change in infrared radiation4
Activity 2: Taking a tour of some sensorsEach toy has its own stimuli
Conclusion: after exploring many smart sensors, we realized that each smart sensor has a different stimulus and a different response depending on its purpose.
Activity 3: Making a microphone Making a microphone.
Exploring the loudness.
Checking how clear the sounds produced.
Learn the difference between a rigid film and a flexible film.

The flexible film respond better than the rigid film in the range of frequencies reproduced. Both films respond better to scratching and flicking than talking and blowing. When we added a substrate we noticed the difference on talking, because it was enhanced by the larger surface area of the substrate.
Activity 4 (part A and B)PART AWe built a PVDF monomer.The formula is : C2F2H2
We built a PVDF polymer.
Activity 4 (part C)If you bend fast the voltage will be higher.
The faster the bending the higher the voltage because pressure increases.
We did an experiment to see How the PVDF film reacts to bendingIn conclusion we found out that bending the film in 1 direction produces a + voltage and bending it in the opposite direction will produce a voltage. We also came up with the conclusion that the faster the bending the higher the potential 8
Activity 5 (part A)
Size (large)averageSubstrate 0.42Without substrate -0.42
We dropped:A fixed mass from different heightsDifferent masses from a fixed height
Activity 5 (part B)
How can heat effect the PVDF sheet ?The higher the temperature the higher the voltage will be10
Design project:(designing a coin counter)v1v2v3averageCoin 1 Mass=8g-0.427-0.335-0.315-0.359Coin 2Mass=5g-0.139-0.115-0.164-0.139Coin 3Mass=2g-0.056-0.071-0.056-0.061
We measured the voltage of the unknown mass , then we found the mass ,which is 3, from the graph. The height the mass was dropped from : 10cm
These are some pictures that were taken during the activities mentioned previously .This slide basically shows our journey.12
Introduction and Rationale: We chose this product because patients health and comfort is our first priority. Some patients are unable to show the signs of discomfort so this device will help nurses to detect that.
Aim of the work :Our aim is to make patients more comfortable and free of any possible skin diseasesmake nurses jobs easier.Be able to monitor your patient from afar.
We chose this product because patients health and comfort is our first priority. Some patients are unable to show the signs of discomfort so this device will help nurses to detect that13
HypothesisPatients will less likely suffer the skin diseases/rashes they are prone to.Nurses will easily navigate their way to the discomforted patient ; they will then deal with them accordingly.
Methods and MaterialsA clip with moisture sensor and a micro processor unit programmed with the bed number . When the sensor detects any wetness it will send a notification message to the nurses monitor .The nurse will change the diaper and sanitizes the clip to use it again The materials are :
Moisture/ wetness sensor
ResultsIf hospitals and medical corporations executed this idea, their patients will be in their utmost luxury, and nurses would have more access to their patients' needs.

RecommendationsWe recommend the ministry of public health to have a look through this research and apply it in hospitals and medical corporations in Qatar.
Conclusions During our al bairaq experience we learned about smart sensors, specifically the PVDF. We did many activities that helped us understand how sensors work, based on that we came up with our project idea.
Many thanks to my teachers, school and AL-Bairaq team from Center for Advanced Materials (CAM), Qatar University for supporting us during our journey with a AL-Bairaq.
Also, I would like to thank the sponsors UNESCO, Qatar National Commission, Ras Gas and Shell.
