The British Board of Film Classification is an independent, non-governmental body which has classified cinema films since it was set up in 1912 and videos/ DVDs since the Video Recordings Act was passed in 1984.

CinemaThe British Board of Film Censors was set up in 1912 by the film industry as an independent body to bring a degree of uniformity to the classification of film nationally. Statutory powers on film remain with the local councils, which may overrule any of the BBFC’s decisions, passing films we reject, banning films we have passed, and even waiving cuts, instituting new ones, or altering categories for films exhibited under their own licensing jurisdiction. In order to protect children from unsuitable and even harmful content in films and videos and to give consumers information they might need about a particular film or video before deciding whether or not to view it, the BBFC examines and age rates films and videos before they are released. This independent scrutiny prior to release ensures the highest possible level of protection and empowerment.

We watch films and videos all the way through and award an age rating and insight to each one. We reach an age rating by applying the standards and criteria contained in our Classification Guidelines which can be downloaded below.

Age restrictions

The bbfc uses the following categories to regulate there films under their law:

12A means that anyone aged 12 or over can go and see the film unaccompanied. The A stands for 'accompanied' and 'advisory'. Children younger than 12 may see the film if they are accompanied by an adult (e.g. someone over the age of 18), who must watch the film with them.

The U symbol stands for Universal. A U film should be suitable for audiences aged four years and over. However, it is impossible to predict what might upset a particular child, especially at this lower end of the category range.

Films rated 18 are for adults. No-one under 18 is allowed to see an 18 film at the cinema or buy/rent an 18 rated DVD. No 18 rated works are suitable for children.

PG stands for Parental Guidance. This means a film is suitable for general viewing, but some scenes may be unsuitable for younger children. A PG film should not disturb a child aged around eight or older

No-one under 15 is allowed to see a 15 film at the cinema or buy/rent a ‘15’ rated DVD. 15 rated works are not suitable for children under 15 years of age.

are you male or female

This survey analysis shows me that the highest member of gender groups interested in horror movies are male dominated. This displays that my horror movie should be aimed at a male audience increasing blood and gore however the chart also shows that females are also highly interested in horror movies which infers this genre may also be highly regarded to them as a norm watching it with friends every week.

This shows that most people picked Halloween and Friday the 13th as their best horror films of all time this displays that people still love conventional horror movies and classical ones such as these and dislike new takes on horror such as the grudge and scream. This infers that I need to make my horror movie conventional and classic like these movies e.g. masks

This result of my survey shows that the majority of both females and males are still in education meaning may have a low personal income to spend due top this. This may affect how they consume movies in my next question which means I should make my movie in relation to this niche audience as well as focusing on the prices

How do you watch horror movies

The majority of my audience put online streaming and downloading on the top of the list for movie consumptions. This may be because they are young and still in education as well as having a low personal income. This may mean illegal downloading of movies may be present and cinema may be too expensive constantly so the ticket prices should be decreased.
