Lionel Andrés Messi , born on 24 June 1987, is an Argentine footballer who currently plays for Barcelona and the Argentine national team. He is one of the best football players of his generation and is frequently considered as the world's best contemporary player. Lionel Messi, whose playing style and ability have drawn comparisons to Diego Maradona, received Ballon d'Or and FIFA World Player of the Year nominations by the age of 21 and won both by the age of 22. Diego Maradona once declared that Messi was his "successor."

Lionel Messi's talent was early detected by his father. When he began playing with the local team, his potential was quickly identified by Barcelona . At the age of 11, he was diagnosed with a growth hormone deficiency, which is a medical condition in which the body does not produce enough growth hormone and whose treatment nessecitates a lot of money. He left Rosario-based Newell's Old Boys' youth team in 2000 and moved with his family to Europe, as Barcelona offered treatment for his growth hormone deficiency. Making his debut in the 2004–05 season, he broke the La Liga record for the youngest footballer to play a league game, and also the youngest to score a league goal. Major honours soon followed as Barcelona won La Liga in Messi's debut season, and won a double of the league and Champions League in 2006. His breakthrough season was in 2006–07; he became a first team regular, scoring a hat-trick in El Clásico and finishing with 14 goals in 26 league games. Perhaps his most successful season was the 2008–09 season, in which Messi scored 38 goals to play an integral part in a treble-winning campaign.

Sunday morning a few days ago. When I was about to have my routine cup of coffee along with a bagel, I realized that I did not have any bread at all. I have to admit that I am unable to enjoy coffee without some kind of baked goods.

Then I decided to run out to buy something, but all the stores were closed, but one. That store did not have any fresh pastries, and I ended up buying four slices of wheat bread. I was frustrated for two reasons:

firstly, I couldn’t enjoy drinking my coffee on Sunday morning; and secondly, the sales woman charged me $3.00 for four slices of bread!

Next, I returned to the building where I live on the tenth floor, stepped into the elevator, pushed the button, and got out. When I reached my apartment and tried to unlock the door, I could not turn the key. I made a few attempts without success. I started banging on the door hoping to wake up my daughter. I was not successful at that either.

I can’t explain how it crossed my mind to check the number of the apartment. The apartment number was correct, except for the first digit: the apartment was on the ninth floor, but the tenth. I was shocked to realize that I had been banging on somebody else’s door.

My Day at the BeachLast week my friend and I were bored after three weeks of holidays,

so we rode our bikes to Nyamplung Beach, which is only five kilometres from where I live.  When we arrived at the beach, we were surprised to see there was hardly anyone there.  After having a quick dip in the ocean, which was really cold, we realized one reason there were not many people there.   It was also quite windy.

After we bought some hot chips at the takeaway store nearby, we rode our bikes down the beach for a while, on the hard, damp part of the sand.  We had the wind behind us and, before we knew it, we were many miles down the beach.  Before we made the long trip back, we decided to paddle our feet in the water for a while, and then sat down for a rest.  While we were sitting on the beach, just chatting, it suddenly dawned on us that all the way back, we would be riding into the strong wind.

When we finally made it back home, we were both totally exhausted!  But we learned some good lessons that day.

One summer, a grasshopper spent his days merrily singing and dancing.

Everywhere he hopped, ants were busy gathering grains of wheat and corn. He laughed at the ants and said, "How dull! Why don't you sing and dance with me instead of working in the hot sun?""We are storing away food for the winter.' they explained."You should do the same."

The grasshopper laughed and replied, "Why worry about winter? I have plenty to eat for now." And he hopped away to look for someone to play with. But when winter came, the grasshopper could find no more food. Shivering, he knocked at the ants' door. "Can you spare me some seeds?" he begged. "I'm too cold and hungry to even sing!"

"We worked hard all summer to store away food," they answered. "What were you doing?""I was busy singing and dancing," he said."Then sing and dance for us now!" they told him. "It's time to work for your dinner."

SOAL – SOAL NARRATIFAlong while ago a tortoise sat on the dusty land and watched the

birds wheeling and circling in the air over his head. He grew dissatisfied with his lowly life when he saw so many of them enjoying themselves in the clear blue sky; he longed to join them and share their freedom.” If only I could get myself up into the air I’m sure I could soar and swoop with the best of them,” he thought.

He pondered on this problem for a long time; the sun burned down and he got hotter and more discontented as he enviously watched the birds.

Suddenly an eagle came to rest on a rock close beside him and, seizing such a favorable opportunity, the tortoise offered all the treasures of the sea if only the monarch of the air would teach him to fly.

The eagle at first declined the task, for he considered it not only absurd but impossible, but, being further pressed by the entreaties and promises of the tortoise, he finally agreed to try.

Then the rabbit said, “No good person kills someone who has helped him. It is not fair.   You can ask the duck who is very fat and knows everything.”

So, both of them went to the tortoise. He listened to their story, and then he said, “Show me the stone.” They went to the stone.“Now let me be sure about this,” said the tortoise. “Put the stone on the wolf’s back exactly as it was when you found him.” So the wolf lay down, and with much effort the stone was put on his back again.

Last year I left New Zealand for Bunaken Island. I went there with a group of New Zealand divers. Getting there was not quite easy.

Soon after our arrival at Bunaken, we got a general briefing. It included a description about how to take pictures under water. Then, we began our diving. In our diving, we saw groups of tiny fish. In order to identify them, we need a good guide. Without some knowledge of their habit and behaviour, it was difficult to identify. In summary, the trip was mostly enjoyable. Once upon a time there was a poor farm worker in China. One day he had no rice to eat and decided to ask his landlord for some. Therefore, he killed one of his ducks and gave it to the landlord as a present.

The landlord received the present and thanked the farmworker. The landlord could not divide the duck fairly, so he asked the farmer, “How can I divide this duck fairly? I have a wife, two sons and two daughters.” The farmworker took his knife and cut off the head of the duck. “This is for you, “ he said, “because you’re the head of the family.”

Then, he cut off the two legs and gave one to each of the sons. “These are for you,”he said, “because you will follow your father footsteps.” Next, he cut off the two wings and gave one to each of the daughters. “These are for you,” he said, “because you will fly away and marry someone.”

Jellyfish are not really fish. They are invertebrate animals. This means that unlike fish or people, they have no backbones. In fact, they have no bones at all.

Jellyfish have stomachs and mouths, but no heads. They have nervous systems for sensing the world around them, but no brains. They are made almost entirely of water, which is why you can look through them. Some jellyfish can glow in darkness by making their own light. The light is made by a chemical reaction inside the jellyfish. Scientists believe jellyfish glow for several reasons. For example, they may glow to scare away predators or to attract animals they like to eat.

Most jellyfish live in salt water, apart from a few types that live in fresh water. Jellyfish are found in oceans and seas all over the world. They live in warm, tropical seas and in icy waters near the North and South poles.

I had never been camping before I met my best friend, Jacklyn. I didn’t know that camping meant sleeping out in nature, in a tent. I guess I didn’t really think about it at all.

We were off to a nearby campground. We drove in and paid for our site. It was beautiful. There were ducks and a small lake and up on the hill there was a pool and small store if you needed anything. At dusk we lit our fire. It was very nice and pleasant. However I had a small allergy problem with mosquitoes. I hate bugs, and mosquitoes seem to be the worse, due to their stinging and being irritating. It was awful, but the camp fire was nice. Jacklyn told me about her camping stories. They were really interesting.

After a full night of stories and fire, we settled in out the tent. We slept in our sleeping bags on the ground. To my surprise, the ground was not wet, and we had a small air mattress under us. Of course, the mattress wasn’t as comfortable as mine at home but it was no problem. Then in the middle of the night I heard scuffling just out of our tent. I woke Jacklyn and I told her that there was a bear in our camp. She told me to just go back to sleep. I really didn’t know that there were bears in local camp grounds.

The next morning I woke to the same noises and found the culprit. It was ducks. I felt so stupid. To this day we still talked about my first camping trip.It was a very memorable experience.

Redfeathers, the hen, was so called because all her feathers were red. One day, the fox caught sight of her in the farmyard and his mouth began to water.

He ran home and told his wife to put on water for boiling a chicken, and then he rushed back, and before Redfeathers knew what was happening, she found herself napped up and inside a sack and not even able to call for help.

Luckily for her, her friend the dove saw what had happened. She fluttered on the path in the woods, and lay there, pretending to have a broken wing. The fox was delighted to find that he now had a first course as well as the main dish. Snakes are reptiles (cold-blooded creatures). They belong to the same group as lizards (the scaled group, Sumatra) but form a sub-group of their own (Serpents).

Snakes have two legs but long time ago they had claws to help them slither along. Snakes are not slimy. They are covered in scales which are just bumps on the skin. Their skin is hard and glossy to reduce friction as the snake slithers along the ground.

Snakes often sun bake on rocks in the warm weather. This is because snakes are cold-blooded and they need the sun’s warmth to heat their body up. Most snakes live in the country. Some types of snakes live in trees; some live in water, but most live on the ground in deserted rabbit burrows, in thick, long grass and in old logs. A snake’s diet usually consists of frogs, lizard, and mice and other snakes.

Many snakes protect themselves with their fangs. Boa Constrictors can give you a bear hug which is so powerful it can crush every single bone in your body. Some snakes are protected by scaring their enemies away like the Cobra. The Flying snakes glide away from danger. Their ribs…apart and the skin stretches out. Its technique is just like the sugar glider’s.

9. What is the main idea of the second paragraph?A. The general classification of snakesB. How snakes protect themselves

What is the Significance of Rabbits’ Large EarsA rabbit is a small furry mammal with a short tail and pointed ears.

Rabbits live in burrow in the ground. Each burrow is the home of a single family. The first fossil which can be attributed to this family came from North America but now they are found in every part of the world. Compared to its small body rabbit has large-sized ears.

A rabbit is a weak and timid animal and is always surrounded by many enemies. Therefore nature has gifted it with large ears to help it to hear even the fun of drop sound. The large area of the ear catches almost every sound wave produced in the air and transfers them into the inner ear. This makes the rabbit to detect its enemies in time and run to safety zones.

You must have noticed that a rabbit washes its ears by repeatedly licking its forepaws and rubbing them over the surface of its ears. It does this in order to keep its ears clean, and also to take into its mouth natural oil which surrounds the ear surface. This oil is important in forming vitamin D which is necessary for the growth of healthy bones. If the rabbit is not allowed to form this, it will develop rickets.

11. What is the main idea of paragraph 2?A. How enemies surround a rabbit. B. How a rabbit detects its enemies.

I always love beach so when my father decided to go to the beach last weekend. I agreed at once. I brought everything I need at the beach like, swimming suit, towel, sunglasses, pocket camera and hat.

Arriving at the Anyer beach in Saturday afternoon, I rushed to the beach to catch the sunset. Watching the red sky in the horizon and the sun went down slowly was amazing. The hotel for us to stay was small but clean. The hotel staff were wonderful. They were so friendly. But the most important is its location was near the beach. Early in the morning I walked along the beach. I found a beautiful place to lie. I enjoyed the sunrise while lying on the sand. My mom brought my breakfast. A moment later I decided to learn to surf. I hired surfing board. I found that surfing is not easy at all. I fell many times but it was fun. I played in the water all day. In the afternoon we came back home. I felt fresh and ready to do my daily activities.

Masjid Agung Demak (or the Great Demak Mosque) is one of the oldest mosques in Indonesia It is located in the center town of Demak, Central Java Indonesia. The mosque is believed to be built by Sunan Kalijaga, one of the Wali Songo (nine Muslim saints) during the first Demak Sultanate ruler, Raden Patah during the 15th century. This mosque is the proof of glory achieved by the Demak Bintoro kingdom as the first Islamic kingdom in Java island.

Masjid Agung Demak is the classic example of a traditional Javanese mosque. It is built from timber. The tiered roof is supported by four enormous teak pillars. This means that the mosque is rather small when compared to many modern Indonesian mosques. The tiered roof shows many similarities with wooden religious structures from the Hindu-Buddhist civilizations of Java and Bali. The main entrance of Masjid Agung Demak consists of two doors carved with motifs of plants, vases, crowns and an animal head with an open wide-toothed mouth. It is said that picture depicts the manifested thunder caught by Ki Ageng Selo, hence their name “Lawang Bledheg” (the doors of thunder).

Erosion is a slow process of the loosening of soil, sands and rocks from the land. There are two causes of erosion. First, water may be the cause of erosion. Heavy rain falls on sloping land.

The rain loosens the soil and carries it away.Second, wind also becomes the cause of erosion. The wind blows soil away from places where

are destroyed, a large amount of soil or sand can be blown away.

15. What is the main idea of the last paragraph?A. The roots absorb the water.B. Erosion is caused by the plants.C. Soil can be blown by the wind.D. Plants help to protect land from the erosion

What is an iceberg? An iceberg is an enormous piece of ice in the sea. “Berg” is the German word for mountain. It the coldest parts of the earth, around the North and south Poles, land and sea are both covered by sheets of ice, over 300. Tongues of ice, called glaciers, stretch out into the open waters of the oceans. The sea water melts the bottom parts of these glaciers, then the top part slides into the water with a mighty roar. The great piece of ice sinks for a short time beneath the surface then it rises again, and floats away as a new iceberg. Some icebergs are miles and several years before they finally melt. The part of an iceberg which can be seen above the water is only about one-ninth of the total size. The rest is hidden beneath the waves. One of the world’s worst disasters at sea was in 1912 when the liner ‘Titanic’ collided with an iceberg in her maiden voyage.

A theatre is a place where people entertain the audience. The people, who perform, called actors and actresses, act in plays on a stage. A stage can be raised platform, or it can be part of the floor in a room, either in the centre of the room or against the wall. The audience is very important part of a theatre because it is for the audience that actors and actresses act, and the playwright writes. Without an audience, they are only rehearsing or practicing.

A theatre can be anywhere - in homes, school auditorium, park and a hail. Theatre means action. In this text, theatre is used in connection with performances on stage by live actors and actresses. It is living theatre.

Theatre in the East differs greatly from the West. The Asian theatre is, for the most part, nonrealistic, or symbolic. Western theatre, on the other hand, tends to be realistic.

Although the jaguar is an animal that is not found in Asia, it is famous

One day, when he was left unattended, the donkey broke his halter and ran into the farmhouse

kitchen. There the farmer sat at table. The donkey rushed up to him and began wagging his tail vigorously,

and knocked off all the chain from the table. He then started jumping around and frolicking like a little

There are a few different ways you can recycle paper. You can reuse the product yourself. For

example, if you print off pages from your computer, only one side gets used. You can use the other side.

You can also make your own paper from your used ones. The first you do is soak them in water to create a

pulp. Take the pulp and squeeze out the excess water. Put it in a blender to chop it up really smooth. After

that, lay it out to dry on a screen. When it is dry, cut out the sheets. It is pretty easy.

Mountain Under the Sea

Under the sea mountains are higher, the valleys are deeper, the plains are wider, the cliffs are steeper, the canyons and gorges are deeper than they are at any other places on earth.

Under the sea mountains have no trees, grass or snow. They lie in complete darkness, never warmed by the sun. Sometimes the peaks of these mountains stick out above the water. Then we call them islands. But the tops of most undersea mountains lie hidden, sometimes more than half a mile under the wave. A few are flat – topped volcanoes that once were islands but have been covered by the sea.

Sailors have to know where the tops of the tallest underwater mountains are so they won’t bump into them with their ship.

Richard Rogers first heard theater music at the age of two. In those days, people bought sheets of

music from shows in the way we buy tapes and records. Rodger’s mother played the tune on the piano.

She and her husband sang along. These concerts took place for many years. It wasn’t long before Richard

learned the words to all the songs. At four, he was picking out notes on the piano to fit the song. At six, he

taught himself to play with both hands. His interest in music delighted his parents. He began piano lessons

at once. Later he saw musical shows whenever he could scrape together the price of a ticket. Soon he

began writing music. His parent urged him to pursue it as a career. As an adult, he became a famous

Air transportation depends almost entirely on engine-powered craft, especially aeroplanes. Engineless vehicles, such as gliders and hot-air balloons, are used mainly for recreation.

Aero planes provide the world’s fastest practical transportation. Only spacecrafts travel faster, but they are not yet a practical form of transportation. Big airlines routinely fly 500 to 600 miles per hour (mph) or 800 to 970 kilometers per hour (km/h). Most private planes and some older airliners are powered by gasoline engines and driven by propellers. Nearly all-newer airliners and some private planes have jet engines. Supersonic jets fly faster than the speed of sound. These planes travel at about 1,500 mph (2,410 km/h). Most airliners chiefly carry passengers. Even the biggest planes can carry only a fraction of the weight of a ship or a train can haul. Airfreight rates are high as a result.

Helicopters, like aero planes, are powered by engines. But helicopters are smaller than most aero planes and cannot fly as fast as or as far as. Nor can they carry as many passengers as aero planes. been a staple in Middle Eastern and Southeast Asian cooking for thousands of years. In addition, ayurvedic and Chinese medicines utilize turmeric to clear infections and

inflammations on the inside and outside of the body. But beyond the holistic health community, Western medical practitioners have only recently come on board in recognizing the benefits of turmeric.

Doctors at UCLA recently found that curcumin, the main component in turmeric, appeared to block an enzyme that promotes the growth of head and neck cancer.

In that study, 21 subjects with head and neck cancers chewed two tablets containing 1,000 milligrams of curcumin.  An independent lab in Maryland evaluated the results and found that the cancer-promoting enzymes in the patients’ mouths were inhibited by the curcumin and thus prevented from advancing the spread of the malignant cells.

38. Where does tumeric come from?A. IndiaB. ChinaC. Southeast AsiaD. Middle Eastern Asia

39. What is mainly discussed in paragraph 3?A. Turmeric promotes an enzyme to grow head and neck cancer. B. Ayurvedic and Chinese medicines do not use turmeric.C. curcumin blocks the growth of head and neck cancer. D. Doctors at UCLA recently found curcumin.

This text is for number 40- 42.Tigers are members of the cat family. Lions, leopards, cheetahs, and house cats are

also members of the cat family. Tigers are the largest cats, and the only cats with stripes. They live in large forests in southern and southeastern Asia.

A tiger’s short fur is usually colored dark orange with black stripes. Each tiger has different stripes, and you can use them to tell tigers apart. The stripes make a tiger stand out if you see them in the open. In the forests where tigers live, however, the stripes make them almost invisible.

Tigers have explosive speed. They have strong muscles and long legs that help them move extremely fast over short distances. Their long tails give them balance while running fast. Powerful jaws and sharp teeth help tigers grab and kill prey once they catch it.

Tigers eat the largest animals they can catch. They hunt wild boars, deer, wild cows, young elephants, and young rhinos. Tigers also kill farmers’ cows and goats. Tigers prefer to avoid people. Sometimes they attack and kill people, but only if they can’t find other food. Tigers hunt alone. They usually hunt at night. Tigers will travel 6 to 20 miles (10 to 30 kilometers) in one night while searching for prey.

Tigers sneak up on their prey. They use the trees and grass to hide. A tiger slowly and silently sneaks until its prey is about 30 feet (about 10 meters) away. The tiger then lunges, lightning-fast, and grabs the animal in its paws and wrestles it to the ground. It sinks its teeth into the animal’s neck to kill it. The tiger then drags the dead animal to a hiding place. The tiger will eat for two or three days until the meat is gone. On average, a tiger must kill once every eight days to avoid starving. Even though tigers are built to hunt, they are only successful in 1 out of 10 or 20 hunts!

Tigers roar to scare other tigers away. A tiger’s roar tells other tigers to keep out of its hunting ground. Tigers also use smells and scratch marks to mark their territory.

40. Which statement is true about tiger?A. Tigers are tame animals.B. Tigers hunt their prey in group.C. Tigers roar to frighten people away.D. Tigers’ long tails give them balance while running fast.

41. How do tigers grab and kill their prey?A. By theirPowerful jaws and sharp teeth.B. By their strong muscles and long legs.C. By their short fur and black stripesD. By their long tails and sharp claws.

Central Park, in the very heart of New York City, is one of the most inspiring

anywhere on the face of the earth. Central Park is one of those places that make New

York such a great place to live. The huge park, 843 acres large (341 ha), is located in

the center of Manhattan. It ranks as a symbol of New York City only behind the Statue

of Liberty and the Empire State Building.

Central Park breathes. It provides a respite from the struggles that have produced the

amazing city that surrounds it. It is a place to reflect, to sigh deeply, to let the tension fade

away and allow the pressures of metropolitan enterprise loosen and unwind.

The park also satisfies that need to be near something living, something

growing; a need to be near something green. Central Park is all of these things, and

much more.

The park boasts several lakes, theaters, ice rinks, fountains, tennis courts,

baseball fields, many playgrounds and other facilities. It is also home to the Central

SANGALAKI ISLANDThe best place to see green turtles in East Kalimantan is the island of Sangalaki. This nature reserve is

known as the biggest turtle habitats in Southeast Asia.Every night, around fifty green turtles make way onto this beach to lay their eggs. Their footprints and

the shell of eggs that have hatched can be found everywhere.Sangakali also has a semi-natural hatchery. Eggs that are in danger are moved to the hatchery by the

staff because they are too close to the edge of the beach. These eggs are then left to hatch naturally.Sangalaki is also one of the biggest habitats of the manta ray. Seeing these creatures up close in the sea

is a favourite attraction for divers. These wide-winged swimmers usually travel in group and when a shoal approaches, it looks like an attack by a fleet of spaceships from a science fiction movie!

before, so it was an exciting experience. When we arrived, a boy named Fahriel had been waiting for us. His friendly father accompanied him. Then we continued our journey to Fahriel’s village. The name of the village was Sape. Sape was a busy village on the tip of the island. I stayed for the whole month in Fahriel’s house.

During the visit, I had diferent activities every day . in the morning, I came to Fahriel’s school and joined the school activities, but in the afternoon my activities varied.

For the first week, I went to beaches. Bima has the most beatiful beaches that I had ever seen. They are clean and have white sand. We did not have to pay any tickets to enter the beaches. It was free.

In the second week, I joined the camping activities. It was great fun. Besides having scout activities, we also had dancing and singing performance. Our team performed ‘poco-poco’ dance and won the second prize.

We planned to go to the komodo Island in the third week. It was just 6 hours trip by special ship. We had prepared everyting. We even had booked the ship. However, we should cancel the plan because of the weather. It was rainy and windy. The waves on the sea were big.

Our last week there was spent by watching a horse race, catching fish in a karamba, and learning how to weave Bimanese traditional cloth.

Though I just spent a month in Bima, I felt in love with its beauty of nature and unique customs.

From Monkey Boy to Choir BoyJohn Ssebunya is a boy from Uganda. He is a shy boy and speaks slowly. This might be caused by what

happened in his life. When John was two years old, Uganda was in war. His mother was killed in the war and his father was

nowhere to find. John was all alone and would surely have died if a colony of green monkey had not adobted. He lived with them for three years. He learnt their mannerisms. He became adaptable to climbing trees, and he ate fruits, nuts, and berries for the next three years.

In 1991, a local woman saw him scavenging for food with chimps and reported it to the people in her village. The people then caught him. It was not an easy job because the monkeys put up a ferccious fight to prevent the people from taking him away.

The boy was then taken to an orphanage. There, he learnt how to behave and speak in human ways. As he was able to utter his first word, it was discovered that he had a beatiful voice when he sang a song. John Ssebunya has now joined a 20-strong Pearl of Africa children’s choir and has made many tours to different countries.

A goup of frogs were traveling through the woods, and two of them fell into a deep pit. When the other frogs saw how deep the pit was, they said, “The pit is very deep. It’s difficult to climb up. You’d better die in the pit.”

The two frogs ignored the comments and tried to jump up out of the pit again and again. The other frogs kept telling them to stop because they believed it was impossible to jump out of the deep pit. Finally, one of the frogs took heed (=listen)to what the other frogs were saying and gave up. He fell down and died.
