RESEARCH PROJECTS

9/13 – Present“Meta-Validity:” Assessing the Tools for Gathering Content Validity Evidence in Assessment ResearchThis new project stems from developing the BACES assessment’s content validity evidence. Although content validity is used very often instrument development, the process by which the evidence is gathered is somewhat lax when compared to the impact such feedback can have on the overall instrument creation process. To that end, this project puts forth a more rigorous, systematic approach to gathering content validity evidence.

8/13 – PresentDemystifying reflective practice: using the data model to enhance evaluators’ professional activitiesThe focus for this project is to investigate the use of reflective practice in evaluation in an effort to enhance evaluators’ professional practice. Reflective practice, one of the core competencies for evaluators, is rarely thought of as a systematic and deliberate process. This project uses the DATA model to provide a framework for implementing reflective practice into evaluation.

8/13 – PresentUsing Integrated Course Design in Graduate Medical EducationThis project stems from Dee Fink’s (2003, 2013) work on integrated course design, and extends the concept to help graduate medical education professionals conceptualize their interventions in a new way, specifically when designing curriculum for the non-clinical skills such as biostatistics and epidemiologic research methods.

07/12-PresentDevelopment of the Biostatistical and Clinical Epidemiologic Skills (BACES) Assessment for Medical ResidentsThe focus of this dissertation research project is to build off my previous research on assessing resident knowledge in clinical epidemiology and biostatistics to develop and validate a new assessment instrument using Item Response Theory (IRT). The long-term goal for the project is a reliable yet adaptable set of items that can be used to supplement the varied approaches to teaching these topics in the Graduate Medical Education environment.

The focus of this interdisciplinary project is to integrate a counselor education construct known as isomorphism into systems-thinking evaluation. The goal is to use both constructs to bolster evaluator knowledge of the conflicts and difficulties that can arise when two similar, complex systems must unify toward a common objective.

Past Projects:

07/11—7/12Assessing Baseline Research and Statistical Knowledge of Medical ResidentsThis project focuses on the creation and pilot-testing of a new baseline knowledge assessment for medical residents and fellows. I am testing medical residents before and after a series of educational interventions on basic statistics and research-related topics.

01/11—6/11ICD/Pacemaker Survey ResearchMy colleague Tiffany Smith and I assessed a homegrown survey assessing the prevalence of certain electrocardiologist practices across the country. This survey was created for Dr. William Mahlow, MD.Role: Graduate Assistant: Survey methodology and statistical consultant, database construction, data collection/analysis, survey creation and dissemination, and appropriating the project budget.

09/10—02/11Religiosity and Spirituality in First-Year Perceptions of BelongingnessThis project was formed as a preliminary analysis of the link between religious attitudes and strength of social support systems in the first year of college.Role: Co-Principal Investigator: Responsible for all statistical analyses, and assisting in presentation of findings.
