Background➔I lecture about pain in a module called ‘Applied Behaviour and Animal Welfare’

➔I have been directing students to the web-based resource called ‘Guidelines for the Recognition and Assessment of Animal Pain’ for a number of years

Page 3: Reflections on an open educational resource

The resource➔Initially CD-ROM➔Now web-based➔No log-in required➔Broken down into segments➔Interactive sections, such as quizzes➔Glossary to help students understand any terms they are unfamiliar with

Page 4: Reflections on an open educational resource

How I use the resource➔Supplementary to lecture material➔Link placed on Moodle➔Videos from site used in lecture➔Screen-shot of site and why it is useful highlighted in lecture

➔Up to students if they make use of resource or not

Page 5: Reflections on an open educational resource

Why I like the resource➔Students can work at own pace➔Open access - students do not need to register or log-in

➔Provides links to the sources they have used

➔I do not have to create a glossary for this topic in Moodle

Page 6: Reflections on an open educational resource

Issues with the resource➔Dated

◆Content last updated in 2008 so missing most recent sources

◆Resource looks dated now, how we view the internet is changing so much, not mobile device friendly

Page 7: Reflections on an open educational resource

Reflection on the resource➔Still useful background resource and I will continue to use

➔Highlight issues to students about the currency of the sources

➔Continue to look for mobile device friendly OER that can encourage students to learn
