Horror

This is usually a story about a protagonist who is put in life-threatening situations that they must endure. Usually zombies or other monsters and the plot is how the protagonist will overcome this. The titles to these films are mainly simplistic or quick cut with not giving much away about the film. This genre allows for simplistic shots that are easy to capture and affordable.

Dawn Of the Dead The opening credits is editted to be fast paced and quickly cut, this carries on throughout the opening title, they also don’t show the protagonist or any other characters. They use close up shots of a few zombies to set the tone and shows the severity of what is beginning and that it is clear to the audience what genre it is. For the audio it uses the sound from the clips from screaming to news reports and more, they use the song ‘The man comes around’ by Johnny Cash. With the screaming and quick cuts to news reports it creates a sense of chaos which sets the tone for the apocalyptic horror genre. The colors of this opening is very dark and seems to have a TV effect over the images.

World War ZIt begins with scenic shots of the beach, town, train, airport, bees, tv shows etc. but with an underlying sense of the virus which is common in the opening of the horrors where they don’t give anything away. They don’t show the protagonist and the simplicity of the opening showing everyday actions sets the tone for the audience suggesting the chaos hasn’t started yet but it has an underlying effect of the disease which fits into the horror genre of the subtle effect. For audio they use sound from the clips and then the song ‘Isolated System’ by Muse. World War Z presents their titles as clustered together and not too big to let people focus on the moving images.

The Dead Zone These opening titles are stills of pictures within the title of the film then the titles fade in over the top, near the end the main title goes backwards with the titles overlapping the pictures as a frame. Again, the simplicity of the pictures suggests nothing has begun yet which again fits into the subtlety of the horror genre, but the audience know there is going to be something because of the eerie music that plays in the credits. The audio was composed by Michael Kamen, was recorded by The National Philharmonic Orchestra, London

SimilaritiesAll 3 of these opening titles don’t show the main protagonist in the film.

World War Z and The Dead Zone show us what humans generally do with typical everyday things or just simple pictures to suggest everything is “okay” so far.

World War Z and The Dead Zone use slow music but WWZ and Dawn of the dead both overlap dialogue about the disease that’s spreading.

WWZ & TDZ don’t give anything away at the start, they also both use their main titles as a frame for their images at the end to reveal the name of the film.

The Dead Zone and Dawn of the Dead reveal their main titles at the beginning of the opening

Both World War Z and The Dead Zone have simplistic opening titles with not much going on in either except the names of the people.

DifferencesThe Dead Zone doesn’t use any popular music but instead uses an eerie instrumental and no dialogue overlapping.

Dawn of the dead shows the zombies straight away and uses jump scares and screams to set the tone of that the disease has already started and to fit it into the horror genre, it lets the audience know what is going on.

The dead zone, although showing a simplistic shot of the main title at the start they use a big blocked title at the end.

The dead zone also uses simple still images

Dawn of the dead is much more active and quick than the other two openings and it suggests a

Reflection

Overall in my product I would need to follow these guidelines;

- Slow/Eerie instrumental music

- No characters shown

- Simplistic shots of scenery or everyday actions

- Not too much narrative to not give anything away

- Big and Bold main title that frames the last moving image
