Pareto Charts

• These are also known as Pareto diagram or Pareto

analysis.

• It provides the graphic depiction of Pareto principle.

• It is a bar graph. The length of bar graph represents

frequency or weight age to a problem from left to

right.

• It is one of the basic tools of quality control.

• It also gives the cumulative view of data and helps in

bifurcating the problems to give a detailed view of the

major problems.

Bunking Lectures

This is a big issue for the teachers and parents today

because students do not want to attend lectures and rather

indulge in other activities that may be immoral.

It can be inferred from the behavior of the students during

the lectures and their results in final exams.

This can be exemplified as students begin to give excuses

to avoid lectures, find ways to get suspended from class,

ask the teacher to leave the class early or escape from

class behind the back of the teacher.

Reasons For Bunking Lectures

• Catching up on hobbies

• Cultural or sports program approaching

• Attending coaching(for e.g., CAT/MAT)

• Insanely boring lectures

• Hatred towards the teacher

• Peer pressure

• The leisure of sleeping/oversleeping

• Dislike towards the subject

ResearchOn asking the 130 students of BBA III year, they gave these

reasons for bunking lectures and when framed them in the form of a Pareto diagram the maximum focus was laid on few reasons that account for 80% of the problem. The Pareto diagram below shows cumulative data in percentage and the total number of students.

The Beginning Pareto principle talks about the 80% output of the problem.

For our problem the 80% comprises boring lectures, hatred

towards teacher, peer pressure, leisure of sleeping and

dislike towards the subject.

When looked into the problem carefully certain factors

seemed to be the indication towards upcoming problem:

• Neglectfulness of teacher towards students

• Failure to make the lectures interesting and easy to

understand

• Pessimistic perception of students towards the teacher

• Teacher being rude and strict always

Page 7: QCL-14-V3- PARETO DIAGRAM- BANASTHALI VIDYAPITH- RASHI JAIN

•Failure on both the sides to understand each other’s

requirements.

•Students caught participating in wrong and immoral

activities.

•Fear of being bullied by the fellow classmates on

attending the classes when everyone else is bunking

it.

•The so called-challenges of friends to bunk the class.

•Other interests such as boyfriends/girlfriends or

movies that keep students up all night and lure them

to bunk class to sleep.

•Less challenging tasks which make the studies

boring and monotonous.

Problem and SolutionAs we have seen in the above slides, problem is not one-sided but it involves both the

teachers and students. Bunking does not result without a reason. There is always

some unsaid cause-whether it is willingly or forced- thus it need to be curbed before

it leads the students to something harmful. Proactive solutions could be:

• Teachers should create a need for students to attend the lectures and provide them

with something extra than just the regular book and web stuff. There should be a

healthy discussion between the teacher and students at the beginning of the session

so that they understand each-other’s requirements and get well along for the rest of

the year

• Students must be guided well towards their goal and must be mentored well to

keep away from vicious acts.

• Parents are the best friends and mentors for the students. They must keep talking

to their children about everything and protect them from being misguided by peers.

• Students should choose their peers wisely that do not mislead them.

• There should be a healthy discussion between the teacher and students at the

beginning of the session so that they understand each-other’s requirements and get

well along for the rest of the year

Lessons learned

• The prospective reasons for bunking lectures

• No problem is without a solution and so is this.

• The concept and use of Pareto charts.

• Various interests of students other than studies such as

hobbies and extra curriculum activities

• Got to interact to the whole class and talk more about

how would they like the lectures to be conducted and new

suggestions.

• How teachers work hard to deliver a lecture and the

students do not care to attend them.

• The concern of parents about their children getting

involved in vicious activities.
