The word ‘Best’ is used as a buzz word in order to boost the magazine and attract a bigger audience. This is the main image of

Will Smith. This main image takes up the majority of the page therefore the producers want to make clear that he will feature in the magazine so fans of him buy the magazine.

This is the masthead which is the title of the magazine used as a brand iconography meaning that it is easy to recognize.

This is the headline and what the producers want the audience to notice hence the bold typography which stands out on the dark background image.

Another buzz word ( “worlds BIGGEST movie magazine” ) which is used to make people want to buy it.

Smaller pictures of other films that are contained in the magazine, this is clear because “AND 20 MORE” is anchored to the images.

The image connotes masculinity as Will Smith is wearing a leather jacket with a gun walking through mist/fog making him look powerful

A strapline is used “ 25 World Exclusive”, this will make the audience want to know what it is as it is ‘Exclusive’ As Will Smith is the main

character in the film as well as the protagonist he is in the centre of the magazine again this will catch the eye of people passing by as well as Will Smith fans.

This is another strapline as the readers get ‘Complete access’ therefore people that are wanting to know everything that is going on in the film industry, this is the right magazine for them.

This is the masthead, However this one is made from buildings. This connotes that the film involves a lot of building the story to get to the final product. This signifies that the movie is more of a cerebral experience rather than it being presented to a passive audience. This connotes that the magazine suggests the film company went against the hypodermic needle theory which suggests the audience listens to every message it is given.

This is a strap line which helps to sell the issue. ‘The Mind-Blowing Issue’. This connotes to the audience that it is an amazing magazine and they shouldn’t miss out on reading it.

This is an enigma makes the audience have to read to see whether it is the reboot of the year.

These are plugs telling you what other contents are inside the magazine trying to appeal to a wider audience.

The main image is of the main character in the feature film. It shows off what the character is dressed like and seems to have a gun suggesting that he could be a detective. You can tell this is the main image as it fills up most of the cover.

This is a pug it advertises another company that subsidises the magazine and has the bar code which sells the mag.

Pull quote which has been enlarged and the colour changed to emphasis what that article is about.

Buzz word designed to get people to buy the magazine so they can get content and information they could not get anywhere else.

This is a specific magazine and not a lifestyle magazine. This is because this is specifically about films and not lifestyle in general.

The background is very misty/hazy connoting that the film on show is quite confusing and nothing is clear you will have to work it out yourself.

The mask acts as an intertextual reference to the game ‘Payday 2’ as both products contain characters that wear masks and are both heavily linked to crime.

White typography is a convention on a darker background for horror film posters. The bold font stands out clearly and this is also helped by the use of a san serif font.

The Purge was released in 2013, the film is of the horror genre and during the film ‘All crime is legal’

The man wearing the mask is in the centre of the poster therefore connoting that he is the main character and has significance towards the film.

The poster states other films at the top like ‘Sinister’. This helps to create a bigger target audience as fans of these films will be influenced to watch this one.

Dark background connotes a gloomy atmosphere that will be made known in the film.

Advertisement of Universal logo, This is included to boost there reputation.

Creates an Enigma as the audience want to know, What is ‘The Purge’? And why does it start? , so this intrigues the audience and makes them want to find out what happens so they buy the film.

Just below the title it says “survive the night June 7th”. This acts as a challenge to the audience for them to watch the whole film, this connotes that the film may be too scary for some people to watch.

Heaven Vs Hell as the high key lighting around the girls head connotes heaven.

Dark clouds conventional to films of the horror genre as they are often set at night (Low Key Lighting).

Enigma – Why is she going to hell? , this is used to interact with the viewers and intrigue them to watch the film.

Hand appears to be dragging the character to hell therefore heavily relates to the film.

Bold, white serif font is used to stand out against the background therefore catches peoples attention.

The fire used in the poster signifies hell as people represent hell containing fire and the devil which is represented in the poster by the hands.

The sub urban setting suggested by the background image is unconventional to the horror genre as the characters are normally excluded from everyone else to create a more tense atmosphere.

Less known actress used therefore the audience can relate to the character and makes the storyline more believable.

The girl is the protagonist (hero) in the poster and the fire and the hands acts as the villain as they are dragging the hero to hell

There is an enigma of the question ‘what is behind Daniel Radcliffe?’ This will attract the audience as they need to watch the film to find out what is going to happen to Daniel Radcliffe.

Name of the main actor at the top where some people will go and watch the film just because Daniel Radcliffe is in the film.

The question ‘do you believe in ghosts?’ will attract the audience as they will be answering the question in their heads and wondering why they have asked that question in the poster.

The title is in bold white writing which makes it stand out. The title is in a sans serif font which isn’t traditional for horrors however it emphasises the title therefore making it stand out more. There is also high key lighting around the title which makes it clearer and stand out more.

The protagonist is in high key lighting which connotes that he is the good character.The ghost is in low key lighting which connotes that it is the antagonist.

The colours in the poster is blue, black and white. They have chosen these colours as they are convention of dark spooky colours.

You have a picture of the main character being scared. This is not a convention of men in horror films as they are normally represented as being brave. The beard also connotes masculinity.
