The Arctic is located in the northern hemisphere in a large basin surrounded by the continental shields of North America, Europe, and Asia. It is an area that spans low coastal plains, mountain ranges to high ice plateaus and glaciers.

Believe it or not, artifacts do exist in the Arctic and Antarctic. In some situations, they have withstood the passage of time and have remained intact, preserved as reminders of adventurers who traversed these regions.

In other situations, careful preservation of items stored in shelters require careful restoration. Those involved in protecting and displaying artifacts or important articles from the past implement a practice called "conservation". To become skilled in conservation of artifacts requires years of specialized training, but the average person can practice some of these highly specialized skills once they learn the basics.

Not many would consider the Arctic or Antarctic a place of natural history, but contrary to this belief, both of these regions are rich in natural history. Both areas have unique wildlife. The Arctic has numerous native cultures that have successfully lived for centuries.
