All these characters are criminals. All their feet, waists and hands are chained together suggesting they’re being escorted to a new prison or are going to all be killed. They’re all dirty and have scruffy, worn clothes. This implies that they’re lower class and most probably homeless and poor, this could be the reason they’re in prison. They’ve done acts of crime which may have been necessary for their situation such as theft or piracy, . This further implies that they’ve been staying in a prison cell or are staying in a very poor conditioned facility. The prison isn’t clean and the guards just look down on them, along with society.

We can hear a man saying what sounds like a death sentence to all the inmates walking through the gate. This may give away what’s about to happen. The death sentence further suggests that they’re criminals because authorities wouldn’t give random death sentences. You call also hear the chains as they sluggishly walk, which implies they already know their consequences and are not looking forward to it.

We can clearly tell that the opening is set in a prison or fort because of the gateway into it and the amount of guards with weapons making a tunnel for the inmates to walk through. We can also tell it’s in the 1800’s as it has something to do with pirates, judging the the type of guns, hats and uniforms worn by guards.

This male character can be seen as a high class individual. He’s wearing very formal clothing that shows that he’s the most important person at the mass hanging that’s taking place. He is wearing a wig that you tend to see a judge in court wearing, suggesting he’s a judge and has been made to announce the death sentence to all the criminals. You can see him holding up a scrip that he’s reading from. This shows he’s part of an organisation called The East Indian Trading Co. This can been seen by the colours he’s wearing. This also tells us he’s working for a company which are against piracy, hence the men, women and children about to be hanged.

He is still saying the death sentence which was put into action by the newly made representative Lord Cutler Beckett. There is no other sound while he says this which could suggest that this has some important aspects that the director wants the audience to hear. The fact that everything else is silent could show his power and that what he’s saying are the exact words from the Lord. This means that the people must listen to what the Lord has to say. We can further see this set in some kind of fort instead of prison. It looks very open with many guards and soldiers. They’re also all carrying muskets which would have been very odd to have seen that many men with a musket in a normal prison. There is also a low angle camera angle which shows he’s

superior to the criminals. It can also show how he’s intimidating and how powerful he by declaring death upon these people. This links back to his high class and his importance to the situation.

This male character illustrates lower class. His hair is long and greasy suggesting he’s not had it washed or cut. This could be used to try and cover his identity or he’s been in the prison. He’s wearing very worn fatigued and stained clothes. This suggests he has no money to be able to get new ones, which suggests he’s a lower class character who lacks funds. He’s also carrying a coin which could be some enigma code as we don’t know why the coin plays such a big part of this scene. It could suggest that all he’s got is a single coin and that he wants to die knowing he had something or there could be a deeper and more thoughtful meaning to a very common item.

He stars singing a song at this point, all the criminals know the song well as they all sing along and make many of the guards anxious and weary about the situation. The song maybe a song about pirates as nobody else knows what it means including the Lord himself. The song could link to the coin in the fact that it’s some kind of code that progresses throughout the film. The offenders make a huge choir that confuses the Guards as they don’t know what to do or how to prevent them. You can also get non-diegetic sound from some drums that adds to the tension of the scene. This creates an eerie atmosphere to the scene. This scene doesn’t give any information about his surroundings or location but the scenes either side of this do. A few scenes later we can see a high vantage point where the cannons are placed to b able to fire on ships below. This suggests that the fort is important as it requires defences to fight back against on coming opponents.
