Biography

• is a Brazilian lyricist and novelist and a musician. • He was born on August 24, 1947 in Rio De

Janeiro ,Brazil.• Attended a jesuit school. As a teenager ,he

wanted to become a writer but his parents were against him.

• Upon his stubborn behavior he was sent to mental hospital at the age of 17.

• After his release at age of 20. He enrolled in Law school and abondoned his dream of becoming a writer . 1 year later he dropped out and lived life as a hippie,travelling through South America,North America,Mexico , Europe and started using drugs in 1960s.

• Upon his return to Brazil he worked as a song writer .

• He was also arrested for subversive activities by the ruling military government.

• He also worked as an actor ,journalist and theatre director before pursuing his writing career.

Writing Career

• In 1982, Paulo published his 1st book “Hell Archives”.• After making the pilgrimage to Santiago in 1986,he

wrote the pilgrimage.• The following year 1988 he wrote The Alchemist.• The Alchemist has gone on to sell more than 65

million copies,becoming one of the international best selling books in history and has been translated into 80 differebt languages ,winning the Guiness World Record .

• His recent book is Adultery in 2014.• Paulo has published 30 books ,3 of them the

Pilgrimage , the Valkyries and Aleph are autobiographical while majority of the rest are fiction.

• He has sold more than 175 million books in over 170 countries world wide and his works have been translated into 80 languages.He is the all time best selling Portuguese language author.
