From there you will devise an alter ego and backstory for your superhero Who are they when theyrsquore not super And of course your hero will need a foil a super villain What powers does your super villain possess And how do they reflect the conflicts in todayrsquos world

Shall we say she has a bit of a temper and doesnrsquot always think things through This also tends to bring out her powers whether she means to use them or not and also in the early days removes what little control she has

Her desire to help those in need can be so overwhelming that at times she believes the stories presented to her even when they were actually designed to manipulate her or other good-hearted folk You could call this being gullible but it is more specific than that Ironically if she applied her powers she would know if they were telling the truth (if the story ldquorang truerdquo) but at the beginning she doesnrsquot realize this and lacks enough control of her power to dial it back enough to just sense harmonies

Her Haitian-Mexican father worked as a security guard during the day and ran a martial arts dojo in the evenings until his injury as a bystander in a gang fire-fight He has been in a wheelchair ever since and lost his job and insurance Her Irish-Polish mother was a public school teacher but added piano teaching to make extra money for the single-income household Stella had to take on part-time jobs as soon as she was able The only way she was able to go to college was through an anonymous donation in the form of a personal scholarship Stella became more fierce in her martial arts studies after her fatherrsquos injury in part to show him her loyalty and to give him something to do of value At the same time she developed a loathing for violence Other contradictory aspects also play out in her personality Having been poor during her teen years Stella desired respect and safety becoming a librarian near where she grew up but insists on wearing clothes to work that are perceived as flashy and cheap and perhaps just a bit tawdry She says they make her feel happy She dislikes being in crowds or loud places but plays piano with a bluesjazz improv group in a local bar on odd nights She turns the back of the piano to the crowd officially so they can hear better but really itrsquos so she doesnrsquot feel on display

ORIGIN STORY

MADRIGAL SUPERPOWERS AND WEAKNESSES

As Stella Madrigalrsquos powers come about through an unusual but apparently minor illness She doesnrsquot even realize shersquos ill at first or was exposed What she notices is that she starts to think a little differently seems to be sensing things she didnrsquot before and which she isnrsquot able to describe until she develops her own analogies for what shersquos sensing describing them in terms of music harmony and melody Initially her awareness of her new powers is limited to what she senses (receptive) The first time she projects her new power she is alone having just realized that someone has died who shouldnrsquot have The shock of this triggers a mental pulse which reverberates outward from her and which makes her feel a bit dizzy but doesnrsquot have any other obvious impact She doesnrsquot realize anything new has happened She is motivated by this death to try to change the social situation that led to the death The second time her projective powers are expressed she is in a large town hall meeting about new policies She realizes the politician leading the meeting is feeding incorrect information to the audience using both charm and influence and false promises to try to gain the audiencersquos cooperation People are listening to his charm rather than to the actual ideas Again the mental pulse is triggered again there is a moment of disorientation but the crowd around her shifts in how they respond to the politician beginning to ask questions tell stories and have a more realistic and dynamic conversation around the issue


Superpower ldquoMusic of the Spheresrdquo Madrigal is able to sense harmony amp disharmony from the microcosmic to macrocosmic scale (eventually) She learns that disharmony can actually create harmony so eventually prefers to interfere only cautiously to avoid creating greater problems The advantage is her ability to anticipate problems as they emerge Weakness Her temper amp powerful sense of compassion can lead her into being gullible or deceived if she doesnrsquot pay close attention to what her powers are telling her The superpower turns out to be a very high pitched mental pulse that functions a bit like a tuning fork It can be disrupted by strong rhythms


At the end of each week we will include a few ldquoscratch pagesrdquo for you to record anything else yoursquod like to add as you develop your superhero Feel free to delete these pages or add more by copying and pasting them

WEEK 2

That time the community decides not to support the politician (Alderman ldquoFitzrdquo Fitzroy) and he is puzzled as is Stella who has not yet taken the name Madrigal Fitz is also annoyed and wants to ensure he doesnrsquot fail again He talks with his scientist consultants about ways in which he can use music and rhythm to create a kind of groupthink experience which will subtly support his message and reputation encouraging the audience and community to trust him and support the initiatives he proposes

Meanwhile Stella is noticing that she just doesnrsquot feel quite like herself It isnrsquot enough to interfere with her job or personal life but her new senses seem to also impact her personality She isnrsquot sure she likes it She sees a doctor Nothing happens and so she begins researching on her own ever more motivated as her senses abilities and shifts in personality grow more distinct

Eventually some time later with the help of a faculty member at the local medical school it is discovered that she has a retrovirus that is impacting her nervous system (This is happening through the use of the endogenous RVEs to facilitate immunosuppression by the exogenous retrovirus in the neural hematopoietic stem cells) This externally acquired (exogenous) retrovirus dovetailed with and activated some inherent (endogenous) retroviral elements (RVEs) that were encoded in her genome and which had been passed down for generations This combination of internal and external retroviral elements is rewriting her genome in subtle ways as the disease spreads throughout her body It doesnrsquot make her ill but it is changing her She begins taking anti-retrovirals to try to slow the spread of change but at the same time she now feels deafened when her new and increasingly useful senses quiet under the influence of the medication

CHARLES DONALD ldquoFitzrdquo FITZROY

As a young man Fitz resented his parents such that it seemed his life revolved around adolescent rebellion While at University he started dating a lovely young African American woman on scholarship to in a pre-med program in part as a passive-aggressive move to annoy his parents She had a dream med school work at county hospital make healthcare better for the poor He thought that was noble and endearing not realizing he was being patronizing They married with genuine affection but for all the wrong reasons His family never accepted her He never understood that he was being as patronizing to her as they were His family was grooming him for political office and he started out as an alderman on the North Side of Chicago One evening as his wife began to realize she was a trophy rather than a partner she stormed out of a family dinner and right into a collision In tribute to his wife he took up her cause to improve health for the poor and made it his own Being who and what he is he attempts this by hiring experts who establish an evidence-base do research and advise him on policy decisions He uses his familyrsquos political agendas as a platform for moving this forward The fatal flaw in his plan is his lack of understanding of and compassion for the lives of the poor

Fitz is the heir to a fortune While often at odds with his parents he has no qualms about using the connections and resources available to him through them He has the classic lsquopoor little rich boyrsquo emotional issues but at the same time is immersed in white privilege while oblivious to it and accustomed to having his way

MARCHERSUPERPOWERS AND WEAKNESSES

The shift from Fitzroy to Marcher is not an overnight event When his wife dies it was the argument with him that drove her out into the night that distracted her while driving He canrsquot admit it to himself but he contributed in a small part to her death His attempts to carry on her mission are taken to an extreme in part because of his undated sense of guilt and he feels that any effort that interferes with his defined goals is a betrayal of her He is irrationally determined to make those goals come true and does not see that his approach undermines his own efforts His use of music rhythm and sound to subtly force consensus and undermine disagreement are not strictly ethical but not illegal He doesnrsquot want to be identified with the research so takes on a ldquomarching bandrdquo appearance for work directly connected

His research scientists find that strong rhythms work well to gather a crowd into a mindset Coincidentally those same sounds tend to disrupt Madrigalrsquos powers

As a wealthy young man Marcher (aka ldquoFitzrdquo) is able to tap into resources not available to most He has a team of scientists working on research about how to use audio and sound to encourage certain emotional states and willingness to believe what is heard He uses their discoveries in his political work to encourage people to agree with him He believes this is for their own good


WEEK 4The Silver Age

Fitz is working to try to justify increased funding for the homeless Towards this goal he is trying to push through an enriched information gathering project locally as an addition to the federally mandated Homeless Management Information System (HMIS) questionnaires This will be his first test of audio crowd management in his efforts to push the approval through Meanwhile Stella is assisting local homeless individuals through the library reference services including one young woman (Dolores) on the run from her abusive husband Dolores is afraid that if she goes to a shelter her husband will find her and does not trust the privacy safeguards of the HMIS One bitterly cold winter night having been run out of the womenrsquos restroom in a public building and sleeping on the street Dolores freezes to death

Stella is shocked by Doloresrsquo death and tries to volunteer for the local homeless advocacy group advising Alderman Fitzroy She argues against his proposal asking for increased privacy controls and flexible or optional data gathering requirements Word quickly gets back to the library where her library director informs her directly to stop her political involvement and step back Alderman Fitzroy is not only from an influential family but he is also on the libraryrsquos Board of Trustees The director is concerned that Stellarsquos activism might jeopardize funding

Stella is unable to let well enough alone or to trust the official processes She feels compelled to bear witness to Doloresrsquos fears but struggles with how to do this without her name being listed She decides to attend the homeless policy town hall discussion hosted by Fitz While in the audience she is shocked to realize that the music for the event seems to be altering peoplersquos reasoning and that the information being presented by Fitz to justify his proposal is incomplete and slanted She wouldnrsquot have known if she hadnrsquot been helping Dolores and doesnrsquot expect others to realize but the few homeless attendees are aware and panicking afraid that this will go through One of them a friend of Dolores protests and is forcibly removed from the meeting Stella can FEEL the audience sliding into Fitzrsquos plan and doesnrsquot know what to do Her powers manifest for the first time publicly She feels the effort of the mental pulse of her powers and almost faints The audience is shaken out of the trance and start to ask questions Fitz can tell that he almost had them and has lost them Both Fitz and Stella are baffled not understanding what just happened


Stella phones the office of Alderman Fitzroy The Alderman is in a planning meeting for homeless data collection Stella has a conversation with the Aldermanrsquos secretary while the Alderman conducts his meeting
