Monthly Projects— Each month students are required to complete a larger project. Look for the list of upcoming projects on the blog!

We have Homework Every School Night!

Read At Home– 20/40 Minutes/Night5X/week , Write the title of the book you are reading and the number of minutes read on the date it is due at the bottom of the planner column. Then have your parent or other designated adult sign.

Subject Areas— Students may have work4.1.2. Analyzes and evaluates own writing using established criteria. assigned in their

reading, math, science, social studies or writing class. Check Planners!

READING

How Can I Help My Child in Reading?

1. Listen to them read aloud as often as possible2. Ask them clarifying questions (and always ask

them HOW THEY KNOW)3. Share the books you are reading with them4. Take them to the library or the bookstore5. Really daring? Help them develop their Greek

and Latin roots (packets available here tonight!)

Turn off the TV and pick up a book!!!

5th Grade Math

What we have found school wide that our students do not know their facts by memory. This Curriculum assumes that the students know them.

Students Need to Know Their Math Facts! • Our Homework Packet has facts practice in it.

• Please take time nightly to study some math facts with your child.We are working on the following vocabulary terms:- Facts - Factor Trees - Factors

- Multiples - Multiplication and Division - Products- Prime - Prime Factorization (PF)- Composite - arrays (rectangles with area)

6th Grade Math

We are still using the Connected Math series!

Big ideas in 6th grade:• Proportional reasoning (ratios, percentages,

fractions and decimals)• Algebraic proofs (yes, that’s right!)• Measuring volume and surface area (3-D

geometry)

Social Studies

Social Studies the Oregon Trail • We are simulating traveling on the Oregon Trail

in different wagon trains.• HWC Wk___, Soc. St. during the month of September

and October will be anything that the kids can share about the Oregon Trail – Sing a Song, bake a food, teach the class a western style

dance, draw or create an artifact that was needed by the people moving West, read something about the time and share it with the class. Share a great webpage that you learned something about this time period.

• We plan on Meeting the 5th Grade CBA’s while doing this unit. Visit the OSPI Website and look at the CBA’s for Soc. St.

Social Studies

The rest of the year

• The Play (job readiness)• US History up to the Civil War (not including)• Mapping North and South America (by heart)• Learning the Declaration of Independence• Economics: Junior Achievement

PE Expectations• 30 minutes of PE INSTRUCTION per week• 45 minutes of PHYSICAL ACTIVITY per week• They need 110 minutes per week of PHYSICAL ACTIVITY by

State Law. So, their homework is an additional hour of physical activity per week. Make sure they get their planners signed each week for these two half-hour workouts!!

• We are also working on developing healthy eating and sleeping habits. We receive healthy snacks (always fruits and vegetables) EVERY DAY.

Music Expectations• 30 minutes of music INSTRUCTION per week• 15 minutes of singalong per week• Band and Orchestra available and encouraged!! (forms

here)• Soon to be an ARTS WASL. Fifth graders need to be able to

draw a shoe, write and perform their own musical composition, well, the list goes on . . . If you’re interested, we can show you!!

Ms. McKell

Who is she?Ms. McKell is a student teacher from

Western Washington University.She has been at Lincoln since January and

will be graduating in December.In the upcoming weeks she will be fully

taking over the classroom. Currently she is teaching during Reading, Math (twice a week) and Language Arts. Soon she will be teaching all day everyday!
